I'd prefer a set of SSR Comps in 17x9, but am open to 17x8.5 Comps, Kosei K1's or Fikse's. If they're wrapped in R comps with decent life left in them, all the better... Drop me an email if you have something... -josh

#2. got into an accident... might as well go upgrade frenzy now! - from Theodore Serbinski

Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2004 21:34:48 -0500 From: Theodore Serbinski <stanson@gmail.com> Subject: got into an accident... might as well go upgrade frenzy now! Hey all! So last night, I was going out to a meet a few friends for dinner over in Fairfax, VA, and I'm traveling on 66 West and the traffic is very heavy, as usual. Stop and go, stop and go. So I'm looking to change lanes for my exit so I look into my blindspot but as soon as I look back in front I see brakelights so I slam on mine but it's too late... I hit the guy in front of me. I thought I got hit from behind too but luckily this was not that case. So I drive my car off to to the side of the road and get it off before the temp gauge goes up any (definetly broken radiator). So that is a good sign... car is still driveable. Once off on the side of the road, car doesn't look too bad... but certainly not driveable. The guy I hit was a Lexus and his bumper was high. Both of us slamming on our brakes not soo good... his backend up, mine down, so my bumper went under his and his bumper took out the top front portion of my car. He drove away from the accident, I had to have mine towed :-/ ... talked to the cop and she said because I was trying to change lanes I should be fine in court... I'll just show up for my date, state this fact and the conditions of the road (not uncommon around here) and my clean record and I should be good. But now, obviously I need repairs, and lots of them! It's funny, I wanted to redo most of the front part of my car (1997 with 95k miles)... new radiator, thermo, headlights + ddes, etc... so now I have that chance, and to use some insurance money to cut the difference! So guys... what should I add to my list of parts to swap in for upgrades? So far I have: - Zionsville aluminum radiator and hi-po kit: http://www.zionsvilleautosport.com/store/shop.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=6134&Product_Code=NP-ALLOYRADK - new metal waterpump (replace even if not broken) - ZKWs + DDEs: http://www.umnitza.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_89&products_id=123 And I was thinking UUC underdrive pulleys, but those seem to be on back order for so long everywhere that I might have to wait on those? Well seems understeer.com has them... hmmm Any other ideas? Thanks all! ted

#3. Second M3 in Accident Tonight - need body shop recommendation in MD - from arionatof@comcast.net

Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 06:35:32 +0000 From: arionatof@comcast.net Subject: Second M3 in Accident Tonight - need body shop recommendation in MD I guess misery loves company, Ted is not the only one that has damaged his M3 in the first snow flake of the season in the DC Metropolitan area. I was driving home and happened to get caught up in the season’s first snow flakes. I just changed to my snow tires yesterday so I thought I would be okay on the snow. Yet I still drove slowly and carefully since snow is snow. Well, the snow didn’t amount to too much but the temperature dropped below freezing and black ice formed. I was ten miles from home, on Rt 32 West near Savage, MD. I was going pretty slowly and then a Chrysler 300M zoomed by me. He lost control and spun into the ditch in front of me (the he got out and drove away.) I saw that so I put my car into second gear and drove slowly, hoping to make it home in one piece without spinning out and hit anything. After ten seconds I heard this huge bang, my car surged forward in a violent jerk and then it came to a stop. Got out, checked the car and “*&#!@#$” followed (I usually don’t curse for those who know me.) Behind me was a Honda CR-V that had a broken radiator. I went and talked to the driver and there were 4 people in the car. He saw me about 200 feet away and tried to slow down but it just wouldn’t. They were young kids who just came back from their grandma’s Xmas party (Two brothers and their girlfriends.) Fortunately, we were all okay, albeit a little shook up. I moved my car out of the way into the shoulder because the road wasn’t looking too safe. Sure enough, after our accident, more cars flew by our side and spun out about 200 feet ahead. It was like watching the live version of “Cops” because the cars start to spin, hit each other, and pile up. All in all, it must have been about 7-8 cars that crashed in front of me. I did the usual steps of calling insurance company, exchanged info, and I called the tow truck. But it was an evening of accidents and the lines of the towing company were busy (including AAA.) When a police officer arrived later we were told that it will be a few hours before any towing could happen. Since my car was drivable, I decided to take my chance and inch my way home, and made it in one piece, with the rear bumper of my car hanging behind the car. The snow tires did its job; I was able to drive over a median covered with snow without spinning. I am hoping someone can recommend a body shop in Maryland. My insurance company said I can choose the place to get it fixed so I want a place that can evaluate the damage and see if it can be done. If so, hope they can do a good job. I got home safely, car is probably wasted but the important thing is I am alive without missing any body parts. I do have a slight headache so I will get it check out. Hopefully it won’t be serious. #5. Transmission tunnel insulation rubbing on driveshaft +rust - from Michael, Dave
Top
Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 12:33:01 -0500 From: "Michael, Dave" <Dave_Michael@maxtor.com> Subject: Transmission tunnel insulation rubbing on driveshaft +rust While under my car for some pre-winter p/m (a little late), I found that the black tranny tunnel insulation was rubbing the drive shaft. There are two black plastic hold-in plugs, but it looks like they didn't design in enough - the rear 6" of insulation doesn't really have anything holding it. On one, side, it's sort of buckled and is rubbing. I did a web search and found a thread on bimmerforums. Seems there are three choices - a sheet metal screw and washer, cut the offending stuff off or glue. I am inclined to try the latter - just wondering if anyone has any further BTDT. Also, I found that the undercoating on a seam edge is already compromised and the edge of the sheet metal (just to the right an left of the trans tunnel, there is a longitudinal frame brace) is rusting. This is NOT due to scraping or anything else (though I have that problem elsewhere). Anyone have any experience with the BMW rust warranty? How generous are they? Thanks for any helpful hints, Dave 98 m3/4 80,000

You end up with a polished driveshaft, which, after you fix, starts to rust a bit. I took a piece of sheet metal and cut it about 1 - 1.5" wide and 15" long. I then fed it up over the tranny and shift lever support and anchored the two ends under where those two plastic plugs are. This holds the insulation up away from the driveshaft. Everybody else has done a good job of providing suggestions (I'll reitterate the use of a *good* 17mm socket with 1/2" breaker bar - MAC or Facom socket and Facom bar are my weapons of choice, in addition to the 14.4V Snap-On cordless impact), so the only thing (non-constructive) I can add is: Bwhahahahaha! :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett - occasional flashes of idiocy, so I'm allowed to laugh :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

My ankle feels much better, too, so whatever I did to it was not totally awful. Do you have a low opinion of Sears tools? I have a set that goes back to 1982, but the driver is too short. Thx, J (I didn't want to post this to the list since I already did one long OT already.) Bummer, sorry to hear that. (BTW, somewhere on the web is a site that explains how to adjust sideview mirrors to eliminate most of the blindspot area - just noting for future reference, no judgement intended. Also, there are convex Euro mirrors available, as well as similar one's from MultiVex <- I have these on the M3.) > - new metal waterpump (replace even if not broken) Good call.
