Middle aged guys shouldn 't be allowed to operate technology :) On the other hand, young guys shouldn't be allowed to write code since they don't understand any of the probable implications. A sad Catch-22. Only older guys can afford the latest technology and only young guys are able to invent it. This would be the failure mode of my original water pump, FWIW, at or around 50,000 miles. The replacement (and associated radiator) lasted ~100,000 miles before preventative replacement. > I'd replace it next time it is convenient. Seconded. #5. Winter tire sizes - from Avedis, Alexander (US SSA)

Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2004 18:15:05 -0500 From: "Avedis, Alexander (US SSA)" <alexander.avedis@baesystems.com> Subject: Winter tire sizes I'm in the process of selecting new winter tires for the 1998 M3/4. I have Mille Miglia Glide II 17x7.5 wheels to mount them to. I would like to install 215/55R17 but tire rack indicates that this size tire would rub and I must go with the 215/45R17 size tire. Does anybody have experience with oversize winter tires on their sedan and are there rub issues you had to address? Are any of you running 16" wheels w/winter tires on them? Thanks for the assistance. Alex NJ Chapter BMW CCA

I find these to be an excellent compromise between snow traction and dry handling (which is pretty important for us here where it doesn't snow very much.) They are mounted on 17x8 wheels, 38mm offset IIRC. No rubbing issues at all. As dry as it normally is here, I think you'd be unhappy with how your car would feel with 16s. Having never tried them myself, though, YMMV. #7. Fan and fan clutch needed? - from Som Naderi

Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2004 16:06:42 -0800 From: "Som Naderi" <som@dimensionracing.com> Subject: Fan and fan clutch needed? I'm looking at the cooling kit at Zionsville Autosport... $618 for the kit -- which includes a fan and fan clutch. $519 without the fan/fan clutch From Zionsville-- Radiator: $459 Thermostat Housing: $35 From bimmerparts-- Thermostat: $25 Fan Blade: $38 Fan Clutch: $122 Total: $679 (~$60 more than buying the kit) If I were to buy the fan and fan clutch now, I'd be spending an extra 100 dollars. However, I'd be saving myself about 60 dollars if the fan blade or fan clutch go bad soon. So the big question is: how likely is it that these parts will go bad anytime soon? (80k, '98) Is it a known failure part? I thought fan clutches last until the 150k ranges... am I wrong about this? Also, even if something did go bad, wouldn't it just be the fan clutch? Do I really need to spend 40 bucks on a new fan blade? One other thing... I seem to remember someone mentioning something about buying a thermostat housing with a hole drilled in for a water temperature sensor. I feel like I'm remembering something completely out of context, though... is there anything special I need to know about the thermostat housing? If I'm planning on adding a water temp gauge to my A-pillar, there's already a sensor for this, right? The one that goes to the dash? Thanks for all the input! - Som

#8. Beer payment (slightly OT) - from Jim Bassett

Well, yesterday, I received a unexpected package. I opened it up and inside were 2 bottles of beer. OK, beer through the mail, cool, but from whom? Dig out the note and it's from a list member I assisted with advice and parts a couple of months ago. Nice! But wait, there's more. It's *homebrew*. Ummm, OK, now I'm getting misty-eyed <g>. I've thanked the sender directly, but felt like sharing the story with the group. While this went above-and-beyond, it's certainly representative of the type of group we've got here. Thanks to Suzy for creating and maintaining this list, and to all of you for making it what it is. Happy Holidays! Jim Bassett - your regularly-scheduled sarcasm will return tomorrow :-) 1998 M3/4 - wouldn't be *nearly* as much fun without this list 1993 325is #44 JP - fun too, in a different way; wants an S52 when it grows up :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

I'm looking to have my fenders rolled on my m3 and there's a Seattle5's member with a fender roller who offered to let me use it for a small fee. Instead I offered him a rack of beer and he actually said no, but a certain Vodka could be accepted as payment. Since I'm not 21 (I'm 20) my mom actually is going along with it and I'm driving up there next week to have my fenders rolled for a bottle of Vodka instead of the $.
