The effect will vary depending on how cold it is where you live (you don't say). If the needle is reaching 11 o'clock your t'stat may not be stuck wide open. At its worst the ECU will run a rich mixture to compensate for the lower engine temperature. This in turn will tend to wash down your cylinder walls and impede lubrication, as well as contaminate engine oil via blow-by. > I just did a Service II in which I changed the coolant, and I'd prefer not > to go back in there until Spring maintenance unless I have to (kicking > myself for not doing the t-stat when I had the chance). Stiffer but not too stiff. The wife used to complain about the E30 M3 I had. She doesn't complain about the ride with the new shocks in this car. Over a lot of small bumps it can rattle your tooth a bit but that doesn't happen to often. If you don't plan to track the car and need something better than stock that isn't too harsh, and you don't want to lower the car. This setup is great. No complaints. Date: Mon, 27 Dec 2004 09:23:13 -0800 From: "Som Naderi" <som@dimensionracing.com> Subject: Re: T-stat question From what the E36 M3 FAQ said: The engine oil needs to be at at least 180 degrees for "normal operation" (ie oil at appropriate viscosity to lubricate effectively). The needle reaches 12 o'clock well before the oil temperature is 180 degrees (around 100 degrees or so). Whether the oil temperature reaches 180+ degrees while the water temp gauge reads at 11 o'clock, I'm not sure -- but I would guess not. I would imagine you're running too cold for the oil to have "thinned out" enough to lubricate well. If this is the case, you're causing increased wear on your engine's internals. How significant the wear depends on how hard you push the car. My thermostat has been stuck open for a couple weeks now. I've got a new one coming in (along with a whole mess of other stuff to swap out). I've been driving the car very gently for the last couple weeks as a result. Hope this helps... I haven't swapped the t-stat on this car (yet), but on other cars I've seen the t-stat is fairly high up relative to the engine/radiator. As Chester said, you can likely do this with minimal coolant spillage. - Som >Gruppe, > >Since it's come up recently, I thought I'd ask a follow-up question on this >topic. > >My thermostat appears to be stuck in the open position (needle hasn't moved >past the 11 o'clock mark since it's gotten cold). #7. cheapest place for BMW OEM parts - from Theodore Serbinski

Date: Mon, 27 Dec 2004 13:59:01 -0500 From: Theodore Serbinski <stanson@gmail.com> Subject: cheapest place for BMW OEM parts Hey all! As I stated in a previous email, my car was involved in an accident a week ago and needs a fair amount of new parts. I have USAA insurance and they have quoted the parts fairly high... I was able to get the Zionsville radiator + hi-po kit for the same price as stock OEM parts in my insurance quote, a great upgrade indeed. This got me to thinking that if I can find a great cheap OEM place to order a bunch of parts, I could certainly undercut the insurance quote, which would be great. I have heard a few names passed, around, Circle BMW, Pacific BMW (I think) and a few others. Does anyone recommend one of these places for a body autoshop to be able to contact and place a larger order? Right now my shop was going to look into Passport BMW in MD (I'm in VA) but I'm sure there are better ones out there. Thanks! ted

Right now my shop was going > to look into Passport BMW in MD (I'm in VA) but I'm sure there are > better ones out there. I've had good luck in the past with Pacific BMW and Nick Alexander BMW. For most OEM parts, I've found Bimmerparts.com to be a good source for the DIY-er (they're essentially a WorldPac outlet for the home user). Dunno if they carry much in the way of body panel stuff. Can your autobody shop access SSF? They are one of the main suppliers of BMW parts (here on the West Coast anyway). My mechanic gets nearly all his stuff through them (not to mention they are a Club Racing sponsor and participant - CEO Hans Kopecky included!) http://www.ssfautoparts.com My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - lots of SSF parts 1993 325is #44 JP - inadvertant appearance in the SSF 2004 calendar, due to being near the SSF car (October) :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.
