#6. Door lock repair-- due to iPod theft - from Jason Olin
Top
Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2005 04:30:28 -0800 (PST) From: Jason Olin <jtolin64@yahoo.com> Subject: Door lock repair-- due to iPod theft So-- this isn't going to convince you of my intelligence (again), but I left my iPod in my car today at the park and ride lot (2 security cars and located in plain view of the train station (Jersey City/Liberty Park Station). I returned and the iPod was gone (miraculously, my 2 month old Valentine One was not taken?!). Maybe the alarm helped a little. So, the guy pried off the plastic covering over the door handle, broke that, and dislodged the lock in some way to get into the car. The handle assembly is loose, but works. The larger black piece that goes around it is busted. The metal work around the upper part of the hole where the door handle goes in is bent slightly and there is a small scrape in the paint above it. So, I'm undecided whether to repaint. I don't want to claim it on my insurance (1K deductible and it's just been 3 years since the last claim). Any clues as to the cost? The local guy I go to (who overtorques lug nuts, but promises not to do it again) said it could be over 1K to do it. Any clues? If I'm asking a question that can't be answered, give that you need to see the thing, let me know. Thanks folks, Jason 97 M3 Coupe, Cosmos Black PS-- remember to take your iPod with you (mine was in its back case, but the white cable that runs into the cassette is (was) very visible). --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Of course, without seeing pictures, I have no idea of the extent of the damage. The black trim holds the door handle in place. Since yours is busted, that's why it's loose. The main area of concern is how bent up all the metal is and if the door handles are screwed up (scratched, etc). When you repair it, consider painting the door handles and trim surrounds. Also, consider deleting the key holes :) I had the euro part numbers added to the US parts database when I was repairing my car so the surrounds without keyholes are available to order here. The price is negligible...$5 each or something. The gasket....likewise pretty damn cheap. In order to delete the keyhole, you'll have to remove the door handle from the door, punch out the pin that holds the cylinder in place and then it will slide right out. Ron Stygar found plugs that fit perfectly into the hole at his local hardware store. Also, I dremelled out the punched part of the pin that the handle pivots on to remove the handle from the whole assembly. This way the handle could be painted off the car and out of the assembly. I send my pins to Ron to have his drill and tap it for the reinstall. If you have the door handles painted, any scratches in the plastic can be fixed with bondo. I wouldn't imagine more than $300 - $400. Both sides have the VAC floor mounts (Very Nice Pieces, BTW) On top of the VAC mounts I have the Sparco sliders and steel side mounts (really cheap compared to the alloy mounts, and I still have A/C and everything, so what would the slight weight savings matter :-) ) Now that I have realigned the sliders they work pretty well on both sides of the car.. Now I can drive the car and it can be adjusted to fit my girlfriend as well, so we can trade cars... Or maybe she'll do a school in it this season. I hope this helps. Also, do your SRD's have a future home? If you're selling both maybe sometime, like you mention, then we may be interested in them for her S4... -Geoff Atkinson Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2005 13:10:58 -0800 (PST) From: Vern Anderson <vernon_anderson@yahoo.com> Subject: Sparco seats and brackets Hello all, I'm going to replace my driver's side Recaro SRD with a one-piece race seat, most likely a Sparco Rev. I may also replace the passenger's side SRD with something else, but most likely will keep it unless someone really wants the SRD's as a set. Does anyone have any experience with a Sparco Rev (or similar Sparco seat) in an E36 M3 coupe? I've tried several Sparco seats and the Rev fits me the best. Also, what brackets work well? I'd like to keep a sliding bracket if possible for co-drivers, etc. I'm currently using the TCKline Recaro bracket on the driver's side, and I like the placement (about 1" lower and 1/2" to the center), but they don't fit the car floor very well and that causes the sliding mechanism to be difficult to adjust. I'd love to find a sliding Sparco bracket with the same placement(lower and towards the center). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Vern Anderson 98 M3/2
