If you have a tear in a boot it can cause weirdness when the motor torques on the mounts. On my GTi ('91, Digifant injection) I had left a clamp loose after the MAF. When I got on throttle it would torque the engine on the mounts, and open up the connection. MAF would see no air, injectors would shut off, car would slow down. Then the engine would torque the other way, close the connection, MAF sees air, and fuel goes with it. Lather, rinse, repeat at about 2Hz. Pretty violent too. -Jeff

I know that if I don't engage second gear fully, it will pop out of gear with a loud BANG. It doesn't happen at light throttle, but give it a little more and the fireworks begin. I've learned to sense the added vibration in the gear lever of not being fully in gear and I can fix the situation. It's possible you don't notice any rise in rpm because the loud bang causes you to quickly lift off the throttle. OK.. on to my question: I'm experiencing what I think MAY be a guibo vibration, but would like the assembled wisdom of people who have BTDT. '98 M3 Convertible, 5spd. I get a front to back shudder/vibration in my shifter in 2nd gear. Movement is visible in the shifter, and regular and rhythmic. It seems worse as the engine/car warms up It seems more noticeable in turns (and perhaps right turns) - it isn't there or is barely noticeable in straights It seems to come on about 3k RPM It *may* be felt in the structure of the car - but not sure on this.. I've felt the console when it's doing it's thing and no vibration detectable. I also expect to have the service records for the car in a day or so. Some items I've noted: ---------------------- This car has the tightest shifter of any of the stick's I drove. There is virtually no play in it except for 5th gear. Other gears you can move the lever about 1/4" or so when it's in gear and that's it. My '99 M-Coupe didn't have this vibration, and had basically the same driveline - but a much more solid body structure. Ideas? BTDT? And if BTDT - how much were the repairs? Thanks!

Hmmm, first, I don't think the convertible had a different shifter than the tin-tops, so my guess is there's an aftermarket SS in there. As to the movement, once you get it up in the air, check all the "usual suspects": guibo, trans mounts and motor mounts. Also, if it is an aftermaket SS, check and make sure it's not loose somewhere (some kits have pieces that may work loose or wear out). Basically, you're in "investigation" mode, especially since the car is new-to-you. It's a 98 sedan with the HK system. I am going to replace the head unit, changer, amps and speakers, etc... I plan on leaving the rear speakers stock as they are just for a bit of fill. Can anyone recommend speakers they have put in the FRONT of the M3's that fit....I have ADS and Focal components in my other setups and I pretty confident the Focals are way to deep to fit the m3. I am looking for specific setups people have used in M3's that are known to fit. Has anyone actually put a 3 way system in or is everyone doing a two way system? How does it sound? The mid and tweeter are in the door and there is another speaker down in the kick panel? All advise would be appreciated. I always get hooked on the "while you're in the neighborhood" sort of things. The center bearing is a must-do IMHO and the rubber support for it, so I've just added another $75 to the parts price. I also figure on the muffler hangers unless they look brand new (will know on Saturday I hope.)
