I think this one was made moreso by the servicing dealer (I won't mention who they are, but they are the opposite of the word "sloppy" and are on Rt 17 in NJ..) The car was in for the top about 6-7 times all told, including one replacement of the entire top, tension straps, the plastic goobers on the inside of the headliner, etc..etc.. And the complaints by the owner were repeats.. seemed they never actually fixed much until one final session about a year ago. Ditto on the front end. The PO complained of it pulling to the right, so it got aligned (4-wheel) about 3 times, got new front tires ($258 each) and then got a set of new struts. It STILL had the same complaint - so every other moving part in the front end with the exception of the steering rack was replaced. It seems they take the parts-swapper approach to fixing things and the PO must have had a bottomless wallet. > > Not to count the entire new front suspension for > > $2,400 about a year ago > >Wow! How does it feel to have a solid gold front suspension? It's pretty - still has all the new-part BMW stickers on all the parts :-) Oh - one other "little" repair. Owner complained several times about what sounded to him like a brake dragging. They didn't find anything. The brake finally started smoking, and they found something.. so it got 2 new calipers, wheel bearings, disks, pads, etc.. etc.. That was about $2000 or so. FWIW, I have never lost a caliper on a BMW (and have never had one seize up on any car..) Dunno how he did it.. Good thing his girlfriend had $$$. >Neil >96 M3 - Bastard child :-) _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________©1946________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ - http://www.njsbmwr.org/

Ordered a new one, and headed to the garage with a paring knife right now :-) The old one, besides apparently shrinking, has hardened up a bit, so even if the lever was supposed to hit the foam, it's now pushed back harder. New one might be in by Friday.. >David Kroth >david_kroth@yahoo.com Thanks! _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________©1946________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ - http://www.njsbmwr.org/

I took the car to a body shop (instead of the local guy who does my service at prices close to a dealership). He quoted $600 (includes reshaping the metalwork around the door handle and respraying). Much more reasonable... Jason 97 M3 Coupe, Cosmos Black __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 10:55:06 -0500 From: Patrick Goss - PA <Patrick_Goss@GMACM.COM> Subject: Possible to program door locks Is it possible to program the e36 to lock the car automatically at key start or other? This is sort of a car-jacking preventative measure and IIRC, the e46 does this. Might be one of those secret open trunk, salute the Buddha weird dealer procedures, but wanted to ask. I do know that if you use the central locking button, you can override by pulling the inside door handle twice to exit, this is the way the e46 is in my experience as well. Guessing there is continuity in concept between models, just not sure. Anyone? Patrick Goss 97 M3/4 with clattery drivers door button lock which amazingly stops when locked.
