The creit was from the factory (or BMW NA), and if the car was so "equipped" it would be a line item on the window sticker, as it is on mine. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com Being somewhat hamfisted - I have WAY too much experience with this.. Problem - a tap is harder than almost any drill except perhaps a carbide or diamond tipped one. Drilling it is typically futile and usually the drill wanders off center boogering up the hole. I've given up with trying to drill taps out. What I would suggest - find a good tool house and ask them about tap removers. These are a specific tool that has fingers that will go down along the flutes of the tap and allow you to turn it out. Before trying this - I would also soak it copiously with something like Kroil - and let it sit overnight. Other techniques I've had to use: EDM machine - electronic discharge machine, basically uses an arc of electricity to cut things.. Make/buy a new part - when I'm done boogering up the part with the broken tap in it - this is usually what I do. Unfortunately it sounds like you'd have to buy a new car body to do this.. If you're never going to remove the brace again - welding it on is an option (not a good one, but an option of last resort..) What I've found helps avoid breaking taps (and it's really a surprise that one would break when just really chasing existing threads..) 1. Use little bites - about 1/4 turn and then back off. Do the turns SLOWLY 2. Use lots of lubricant - there are specific oils made for tapping things, some for ferris metals (steel, cast-iron) some for softer metal (aluminum).. use the correct fluid 3. Remove the tap every few turns and blow off the chips and blow out the hole, then redo #2 Doing this - I've managed to cut down on the number of broken taps and new parts I've had to replace, but it's never a given that a tap won't break. It could have a weak spot in it that will give with no real provocation. Good luck.. _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________©1946________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ - http://www.njsbmwr.org/ '98 M3c/5, '03 525iT, '87 K75S

I asked the service mgr. why this car had them and mine didn't ('97 Luxo Coupe with manf. date 10-96). As of last month, he is still looking into it -- yea right! The special tool sounds like the best option. Without that you will need a very specific type of bit, read not cheap. The masonry bit trick may work. I had to remove a broken stainless bolt that had a broken extractor in it, out of an aluminum motorcycle wheel. Please don't ask!!!!! Anyway, a cobalt bit. Not one with a cobalt tip or coated. Use one smaller than the item you are trying to remove so when it wanders and finally catches you don't. ruin the hole. After you get most of it out you can use dental picks or something to clean out the larger chunks. If you haven't destroyed the hole you can either re-tap or drill up one size and tap. I have been able to do the above and not ruin the hole.
