#1. Bolt on 300hp/Euro motors - from GGray657@aol.com

Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 11:02:49 EST From: GGray657@aol.com Subject: Bolt on 300hp/Euro motors The stock S50 US motor can make around 240ish more with cams. The turbo kits are bolt on to completely stock cars, running 8.5 psi. 320-340 at the wheel Cost wise the turbo is the best way to make power. The S52/3.2 motor upgrade is pretty common. You can find used motors pretty cheap these days. One reason I am not a Euro motor guy is the plain cost of maintenance and parts, yes they do look sexy in the engine compartment...But, better hope it does not break! My friend blew the head on his, shim through the side of the head...The bare head was major $$$ I could buy a complete take out S52 for what his bare head cost! I was shocked at the cost of parts for his motor, I though my S14 race motor was expensive! The S50/S52 US motors have a pretty large amount of aftermaket hot rod parts. I like to call the E36 M3 the Mustang of the BMW world...Basically if you want a part to hot rod the motor, driveline, suspension, you can get it! James at Bimmerworld is a prime example of parts still being developed for our cars... In the long run it's just not worth the money to convert a car to euro power..Maybe three years ago but not now.. Gary Pro Bike/Pro Bike Cycling Team

I think the brake pedal might not get used....My rational is my car and all my parts are paind for, so I can spend money on the car...Since I don't have a payment on any cars we own....I don't look at my car and factor in selling it later. Worse than a kid! He was a great dog, loved to work on BMW's or eat parts of BMW's....Pretty much if he could get it the mouth he would try and eat it... Gary Gray Pro Bike/Pro Bike Cycling Team

There are a few folks (from the forum) using modified cams from DSR (Dyno Spot Racing http://www.dynospotracing.com/cams.htm ) $450 plus core. EBay it for #24 injectors (Ford) $250, Euro or 540 HFM $250 (Bimmerforum parts), Dinan Stage 5 Software $800, Fan and ASC delete $75, M50 intake $50 from eBay or a junkyard, $100 in parts for the M50 mod. There for around $2K you have your "close to" 300hp :) Ahmad Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 09:53:27 -0600 From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] 300HP??? I am really at a loss to understand why anyone would spend $7K to $10K on hp mods. I had typed a long series of questions, but decided they were accusational and deleted them. As far the M3 goes I think the cam kit is the upper limit of rationality, but I must be _waaay_ off the mark. Please reset my calibration. Mel

Hey Mel, It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. :-) My engine mods have been limited to JC Software, EuroSport intake, and AA exhaust, but that is all my race class allows. It is also all my budget would allow for a street car. In higher classes like SCCA SM, your wallet is your limit. Who is handling the software revisions for you? Also you stated "...and much easier on the driveline than the Schrick", did you mean 'valvetrain' instead of 'drivetrain'? TIA KLBurgess -------------------- 6 -------------------- Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2005 22:56:15 -0500 From: "James Clay" < james@bimmerworld.com > Stay tuned for our new cams... We have been working with Sunbelt (Our WC engine builder) on these and the design is finished, just need to solve a packaging issue. They are worth at least 12Hp over a Schrick, are streetable, and much easier on the driveline than the Schrick is (you can rev to 7600 versus 6800 for the Schrick on a STOCK valvetrain, really take advantage of that M50 intake). New cam design methods and a super engine builder/ME like Jim at Sunbelt really delivers here. OBDI packaging will come first of course, then WC season hits and you OBDII guys might have to wait a while. That is all the info I am offering now (sorry to tease) but the details are a little uncertain until we figure out the packaging. I guess I agree with you, but then it's different for each person. I *briefly* considered the cam kit when we were doing the valve job on the M3, but I just couldn't justify ~$3000 for a daily-driver/family-hauler that doesn't see the track or autox anymore. Besides, I have a race car that does a perfectly good job of draining my wallet <g> - and does a pretty good job satisfying the "need for speed". A few months ago I decided to trade my daily driver 330i for an AMG C55 (various reasons, but the main one was power). Funny thing is, the cost for basic power mods on this car are even more ridiculous than BMW's. An ECU reprogram is anywhere from $1500-2k, airbox is $2k, diff is $4k, it's just stupid. At least this car doesn't really need more power, just bigger tires & better alignment. After a few years you could buy another whole car for what many of us probably spend in mods. Gee, that STI does sound like fun... -- Roger "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> wrote: >I am really at a loss to understand why anyone would spend $7K to $10K on hp mods.
