Is this true? Any longer duration/higher lift cam is likely to be rougher on the valvetrain due to both the higher accelerations and forces involved, as well as the usually higher rev limits that accompany the use of more aggressive cam profiles. If the cams are well designed and well applied these effects may be unimportant, and if not... No the rev limit is not lower, it's still 7200 or so (? I forget). Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2005 01:27:15 -0600 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Re: Rear Subframe Removal Chad- I did just this about 6 months ago (inside) with just the rear of the car on jackstands. It's a pretty straight forward process pulling the exhaust, diff, and wheel hubs, then I removed the entire subframe (4 bolts!) with the upper and lower control arms in place. Not very hard once you've got the diff out. I had all new OEM bushings and ball joints for every part, but not a good set of bushing install pullers, so I only replaced two bushings on the control arms and the outer-upper ball joints in the wheel hubs (which eliminated an persistent and very annoying klunk I had for about a year). At a leisurely pace (and with the proper pullers) I'd guess about 4-6hours tops for a diy (upper range if you haven't de-cruded the diff bolts and removed it recently). Again, very direct and simple wrenching and well worth it, if just to appreciate the economy and strength of bavarian design. Don't forget the alignment afterwards and you're set. This is the one piece deal with the leather boot attached. I've still got the original box and installation instructions. (The part # on the box is 25 11 1 222 274) Shift knob/boot are in excellent condition with no rips or wear marks. I probably only used this one for about 5000 miles, as I collected shift knobs back then and would rotate them depending on my mood :-) I kept this one when I sold my M3 as I wanted to put it in the 325ix but unfortunately, it doesn't fit that car. Price is $75 and I'll include shipping as long as you live somewhere on this side of the planet. Sue

#5. Denied catalytic converter replacement under 8 yr/80K emissions warranty due to Dinan mods - from Hans Batra

Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2005 20:36:38 -0500 From: "Hans Batra" <hansbatra@yahoo.com> Subject: Denied catalytic converter replacement under 8 yr/80K emissions warranty due to Dinan mods List, I took my car to the dealer yesterday am (Nalley BMW in Decatur, GA) to have them inspect the cats and replace them under the 8 yr/80,000 mile emissions warranty if in fact they were defective. A mechanic did come out and agreed the cats had gone bad (we could hear the internals of the cats making noise as he shook the exhaust by tapping on the exhaust tips with his foot). However, the service advisor, after inputting the VIN, realized that the car had been into the dealership a few years ago and had Dinan programming installed (along with a Dinan TB, HFM and a CAI). The warranty coverage on the cats was denied due to these mods. The explanation given was that the Dinan software causes the car to run in a rich condition and therefore the cats have to work harder, causing pre-mature failure. I will call Dinan tomorrow and see what they have to say but any input is appreciated. regards, Hans 1997 M3 with 63K miles

#7. 1995 M3 in Snow? - from M540

Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2005 09:22:00 -0500 From: "M540" <m540@bellsouth.net> Subject: 1995 M3 in Snow? All: Do any of you routinely drive your M3's in the snow? I have a 1995 M3 (no traction control) and may find myself in the Denver area next winter. Will this car be safe and confident in occasional snow with a set of Blizzaks or is this a good time to move to a newer car with traction control? I have plenty of snow driving experience myself, but it has all been in FWD Saabs. The only BMW I've ever driven in snow was a mid-80's five series which could get stuck on a flat road with an inch of snow. Thank you in advance, Kevin

Yes, both the '99M3 with traction control and my '86 325e without traction but with lsd. Both are equipped with Blizzak snows for traction and I have yet to have a problem in Upstate NY where we get a lot of snow. In one case 2 years ago I accidentally found myself using the M3 airdam as a snowplow when I turned into my bank parking lot without realizing there were between 8 and 10 inches of snow there. I wouldn't recommend that approach but I didn't get stuck. Only problem I ever have is a tendency to fishtail under cornering because of the lsd in the 325 if I apply too much power. Think of it as practice for the track. Driving around in this Northeast snow made me realize that the Michelin Pilot Alpins absolutely suck. Just going down a mountain in 2nd gear going slow, the rear was wagging pretty badly. It took a lot of driver concentration to make sure that I didn't end up against the guardrail. The old Pirellis were definitely leagues better. FWIW, Chester =====

First, your specific question. I drove an M3 for the first time at an autocross yesterday. OMG factor 10+, first of all, but second, it handled very closely to my '95 Nissan 240SX which did very well in the snow. If you're not comfortable with oversteer, it may be difficult at first, but if you're okay with getting the back end out a bit, it'll do just fine. With the balance of the car, I don't imagine traction will be a problem with good snow tires. Secondly, I've lived in the Denver area for 27 years, and snow just isn't a problem much. Sure, it snows, but it's usually not a whole lot, the roads are cleared fairly efficiently, and it's usually gone the next day (if not that afternoon). When it snows, just take it easy, which isn't a problem because traffic crawls and you're forced to go slow. by that afternoon, the roads will be fine and your corner speeds will be up again. Hope this eases your concern a bit... - Jeff Littleton, CO -----Original Message----- From: M540 [mailto:m540@bellsouth.net] Sent: Monday, January 24, 2005 7:26 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] 1995 M3 in Snow? Well I finally got around to updating my site and getting pictures up of the contours. Here are the pictures (sorry not in chronological order and pictures are missing of the wheels completely sanded down): http://www.cilon.com/pictures/folder/m3/mcontours Turned out quite well I must say. I'll post pictures soon of the wheels on my car. Basic process, used that Airplane coating stripper to remove clear coat and *most* paint. Had to sand the rest the off, which was a bitch. Then put on a quite a few coats of Dupli-Color wheel paint, then finalized with a few coats of Dupli-Color clear coat. Looking pretty sweet for a DIY, esp when I got these wheels for free and they looked like crap. I think the Wurths paint would have been a smoother and duller gray, but the Dupli-Color isn't too bad. We'll see how it looks on the car tho! ted ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************
