Then, put it into gear when climbing the next hill. That said, the Vredestein brand has been highly rated by many BMW owners, and was discussed in great detail on the dcmetrobmw list last fall. http://www.vredestein.com/ -rb (now living in San Antonio, where we don't have no stinkin' snow!) Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 15:32:52 -0800 (PST) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Snow tire opinions Hey all. Last week, I went snowboarding at Hunter Mtn in upstate NY. Of course, that was when the snow was coming down pretty hard and while in 2nd gear going down the mountain at about 5 - 10mph, the ass would start coming around. I'd like to say that it was the awesome driver prowess that kept the car off the guardrails, but I'm sure a bit of luck was involved. Anyway, these 225/45R17 Michelin Pilot Alpins absolutely suck. I had the old Pirelli snow tires from the Winter of '99 - '00 and only took them off last year when the tread was a bit worn. With the Pirellis, I could never get the rear wheels to break loose in the dry. With the Michelins, 1st gear is guaranteed to spin the wheels a bit. I've never had much confidence with these tires for some reason and last weekend certainly reaffirmed that! So...in addition to calling up Michelin and bitching (I have now go get the tires inspected at a local Sears to do anything), I'm wondering what some options are: I'm considering: - Blizzak WS-50 - Pirelli Winter 210 Snowsport - Pilot Alpin PA-2 as a worse case scenario if Michelin decides to warranty them. Any other tires I should consider? I guess there are the LM-22s and the Nokian Hakawhatever. These tires will be mounted on the factory 17x7.5 wheels. TIA, Chester

It's a much nicer area to live than the DC area. Cost of living is lower, people are more friendly and laid back, traffic is much better. So no, you won't be seeing me around any northeast tracks. I am planning to participate in some driver's schools here in Texas. The track selection seems to be much more limited. If anyone on the list has some additional info on tracks in Texas, please send them my way. But, for now, we're just settling in and enjoying the nice weather and friendship. #5. Roll Bar Padding - from KResener@aol.com

Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2005 17:12:35 EST From: KResener@aol.com Subject: Roll Bar Padding I'm having a roll bar welded into my car over the next week or so, and am in search of some good padding, preferably in a grey color that'll match my dove grey interior. I've found several sources after googling "roll bar padding" and it all seems to be the same material. Anything I'm missing, or is there just one type of padding available? Bonus points for steering me to a source for grey zip ties, too! Thanks for any guidance, Kurt Resener Louisville, KY '95 ///M3 (gutted, awaiting welder) '97 528i (in shop awaiting neutral shift lock switch) '97 Audi A6 Quattro Avant (wife's, won't break) '75 Mercedes 280c (needs a carb rebuild) Four damn cars, and I'm in a rental POS Grand Prix!!

My simple search leads me to believe that you can only get the good stuff in black, red, or blue. Maybe match the outside of your car? #8. Bridgestones on sale at Costco - from CurtAinSB@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2005 02:09:59 EST From: CurtAinSB@aol.com Subject: Bridgestones on sale at Costco I read some recent posts on tires, and decided to buy the Bridgestone RE750's (one step below "ultra" performance, longer tread life). They are rated very highly in a Tire Rack survey. Well, it turns out that Costco has them for $161 each, which is pretty near the Tire Rack price. But at Costco it includes mounting and balancing. Also, on the costco.com web site it shows a $60 discount on any four Michelins or Bridgestones. So that ends up being a pretty good deal! But it expires the 30th of this month. Thought I'd let y'all know. Curt Red '95

#9. Brake Master Cylinder Problems - from Raza Uddin
Top
Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2005 00:55:23 -0800 From: Raza Uddin <raza.uddin@gmail.com> Subject: Brake Master Cylinder Problems What are the symptoms of a failed/failing master cylinder? After changing pads and bleeding my car for a weekend at Thunderhill, I was greeted with a spongy pedal and fluid underneath the car when trying to bed in the pads. Needless to say, I wasn't going to take the chance driving the M3 at the track. I found that the area where the master cylinder is attached to the booster is moist and is draining Motul RBF600 with the aplomb of a leaky faucet. I'm pretty confident that the master cylinder is gone (and a search of the archives agrees). Are there any write-ups of the procedure? Is it a relatively easy DIY job? Any helpful things to look out for when doing the procedure? Any other items that should be done/replaced while I am in there? Thanks in advance! Drive Safely, Raza
