#3. Oil pump sprocket nut failure and repair info needed - from Vern Anderson

Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2005 11:34:44 -0800 (PST) From: Vern Anderson <vernon_anderson@yahoo.com> Subject: Oil pump sprocket nut failure and repair info needed Hello all, Does anyone have any info on the nut that holds the oil pump sprocket that can come loose and cause engine failure? I don't think it was a very common problem, but it has happened to a few. It happened to my car years ago at Mid-Ohio and BMW replaced the bottom end under warranty. I want to check mine (while I have most of it apart) and there are a few other folks with M3's that want to check theirs. I'm not sure what BMW did to repair mine; if they just installed a new pump and used locktight on the nut or if they did something a little more permanent. I lost a huge chunk of my list archives and cannot easily retreive them; I beleive that this discussed within the past 2 years on the list. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Vern Anderson

#5. Cotton shirts for driving schools? - from Carl Stern

Date: Thu, 03 Feb 2005 13:41:28 -0700 From: Carl Stern <Carl.Stern@xilinx.com> Subject: Cotton shirts for driving schools? > I vote for long sleeves and cotton so it can be a driving school shirt. My chapter specifies this too. Why? Anyone who has bought kid's pajama's in the past 20 years knows cotton is out and polyester is in for fire reasons. I've heard polyester can melt and cause burns too, but I'm not an expert on either. What is the reasoning for cotton? Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2005 16:52:00 -0500 From: <cteague@cox.net> Subject: Rear Axle Bolts (to Diff) I have to replace the diff this weekend. The 3.23 is going back in. The 12 (or so) external torx bolts that bolt the rear axles to the diff are original. Is there any reason to replace these while the diff is out, or should the originals be fine? It's got a lot of autox miles, and more to come. thanks, Chris 97 M3/4

A colleague of mine at work drives a 5 series and her warranty is almost up. She has been offered the BMW Extended Maintenance contract, the one that covers oil changes, etc. She has already purchased the Extended Warranty contract, the one that covers powertrain, etc. I know this is not the 5 series forum, but I just wanted to help her out and did not want her to be another dealer stat. Any opinions? thanks

#10. Question about rear access panel (M3/4) - from arionatof@comcast.net
Top
Date: Fri, 04 Feb 2005 15:06:54 +0000 From: arionatof@comcast.net Subject: Question about rear access panel (M3/4) Folks, my car was rear ended in December and it is sitting in the body shop right now with the whole rear end/rear seats disassembled. I went and check on the progress today and noticed that the access panel behind the rear arm rest is a thin sheet metal that is loosely welded. Obviously the original owner didn't order that option. So I am thinking I should just the mechanic to cut out that piece. He doesn't see that as a problem. I think that would allow me to stick skis, 2 x 4's etc through there. I will just cut a make shift hole in the trunk lining and fix it up with some velcro (inside of the car is already done that way from factory. So my question is, does anyone see any negatives in performing this little "surgery"? Thanks, -Johnny 98 M3/4, 98K with the rear gutted out ... -- mailto:mclee@ieee.org
