#3. Barbie says "Math is hard!" - from Jim

Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 09:39:25 -0800 From: Jim <rx3sp@lanset.com> Subject: Barbie says "Math is hard!" Question: "Subject: Effective spring rate (rear) Does anybody knows what's the "effective" spring rate for our cars? I mean, for a spring rate of K lb/in the effective spring rate should be approximately S x K, with S a constant depending on suspension geometry. Alternatively, you can help me with the following... I'm trying to figure out if I have enough adjusting range in my rear GC spring perches to preserve my current ride height as I go from 500 to 550 lb/in springs. I want to avoid getting shorter springs as I like the almost full suspension travel I get with the 7" springs. So the question is how much will my ride height change between 500 and 550 springs? Thanks, Fernando '97 M3/4" Ok, write down this number: 0.46 This comes from taking the distance from the center of the spring to the inner pivot, divided by the distance from the outer pivot to the inner pivot (the length of the arm). Then you square the whole thing because thats just what you do. (I could explain it if I had a chalkboard) Now that you have this number, you take the inverse and multiply it by the weight of that corner. (this is because we are working backwards into the answer......) So an example corner weight minus unsprung weight for a four door is, lets say, 461 pounds. (600 corner -139 hub wheel brake etc.). Now we take 461 pounds and multiply by 1 over 0.46 and get 1000 lbs. THIS is the load that the spring thinks it has. Now, a 500 pound per inch spring with 1000 pounds (static load) on it will compress 2 inches. A 550 pound per inch spring with 1000 pounds on it will compress 1.82 inches. (1000 lbs divided by 550 pounds per inch equals 1.82 inches) Now the difference between 2 and 1.82 is 0.18, and at 8 threads per inch is 1.44 (0.18 inches x 8 threads per inch equals 1.44 threads) threads downward to compensate for the stiffer spring not compressing as much. This is an example number. This math works almost perfect for stock width e36. Track width compensation needs to be figured in for e46 and especially e46M3 Now having said all that, I just got the newest coolest springs. These were designed by myself and an engineer at Eibach Germany in July, and were just able to be made in December. They use the very latest technology in spring wire, which is high tensile strength steel developed originally for valve springs. This is a big deal because until just a few years ago, ALL steel (suitable for springs) had the same "stiffness". This new wire allows the spacing between the coils to be larger, minimizing any chance of coil binding. Net result for e36 owners is a 6 1/2 inch long, 545 pound per inch barrel spring, among may others. Soon, all this math will be unnecessary!!!!! -- Jay Morris

I don't know about the Maval brand, but they are all ZF racks and Maval is likely the rebuilder. I ended up buying a Atsco reman rack from Autozone as it had a limited lifetime warranty vs. 1-year on all others I looked into. It was also the cheapest. For the outer tie-rod nut, you can either put a jack under the ball joint and raise it so that there is weight on the joint, or you can squeeze it with giant pliers (like 16" channellocks). The jack method doesn't require extra hands. > > -------------------- 10 -------------------- > Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2005 23:39:18 -0800 > From: "Som Naderi" <som@dimensionracing.com> > Subject: Steering Rack and Tie Rod Nut > > Group, > > Couple questions regarding swapping my tie rods out. > > 1) Upon removing the boot around the left tie rod, there was a vast amount of > grease on the steering rack. #5. FS: PF97 Race Pads - from twisty M3

Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 12:49:17 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: FS: PF97 Race Pads I've got a brand new set of front PF97s (E36M3, obviously) and some rear PF97s with plenty of life left (they're at 8mm pad thickness, which by my experience will last a while, probably as long as the whole front set of new pads). New fronts, with our list discount, come to about $190 and I paid $216.50 with shipping. I'd like to sell the front and rear pads as a set for $215. If anyone who's going to Buttonwillow this weekend wants them, I'll bring 'em along with me. Jonathan L.

#6. O2 Sensor - from Shane Kleinpeter

I got a new exhaust and I couldn't get the old one out of the old exhaust so I sold it with the thing attached. Where's the best place to get one of these, and is there any generic O2 sensor that I could use in it's stead? The connector went with the exhaust so I might need one of those to make a generic work. Both times I went there I went to Heavenly. Great view, good skiing. I suggest you find a place close to the gondola as it takes straight up to the mountain, without having to go through the beginner areas. Also Heavenly is close to the casions :) -- mailto:mclee@ieee.org > Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 14:10:02 -0800 (PST) > From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> > Subject: <OT> Going to Tahoe...need advice > > I'll be heading to Lake Tahoe from March 10th - 13th for some snowboarding. > Anyone have recommendations for places to stay?
