Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2005 07:44:34 -0500 From: Craig Perrin <cperrin@tampabay.rr.com> Subject: An authority gets it right In his latest "Back Seat" column, David E. Davis, Jr. writes: "Each year since 1990, the editors of Automobile Magazine have picked an Automobile of the Year... Studying that list, and giving free rein to my most subjective and prejudiced impulses, I would happily opine that the best of the best, the Automobile of the Year that will survive all the years with reputation intact, is the BMW M3." An inset photo of a Dakar yellow E36M3 bears the caption: "The 1995 BMW M3, still the best." After three plus years, 40K miles, and some time in more modern rivals, this owner agrees with David E. Davis, Jr. Still no boredom or serious roving eye. Craig Perrin Hellrot 95 M3

Yes, at this time of year the barren northern tundra is frozen and I have put my M away in favour of my sled dog team and cross country skis. I am concerned about the worst case senario of stop and go traffic in the summer where tempertures hit the 90's and humidity is a little less than 100%. Lowell, do you encounter much stop and go traffic in southern Texas? Gerry

On the other hand, mine blew acid all over my trunk, so, "ymmv." It's unclear exactly where the acid came from, but not unclear where it wound up -- dissolving the paint in my tire and battery wells. Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2005 09:57:02 -0500 From: "Robert Chay" <lists@rchay.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Side Mirror popoff I disagree. I had both side mirrors stolen because they're easy to pop off. The assclowns even took the time to unplug the wiring rather than cut them b/c it was so easy (one good thing that happened). $600 later (mirrors and paint) I had another set. I got some really strong glue and put a few drops in each mounting hole. Now they need to take the door if they want the mirrors. In the 5 yrs prior, I've had them pop off once because someone bumped into them. There's no other reason for them to come off so I glued them on. -Bobby > -----Original Message----- > From: Foley, Brian > > > I agree that it's great they pop off and don't break! > > >

I also accomplished a fan delete - left the fan off! There are "fan delete" kits on the market that add a 80C/176F thermostat and a 80C/88C fan switch + water wetter. I have not accomplished any of that. I don't see the need. A) I live in a temperate climate; B) The Zionsville unit has additional capacity and the ALL aluminum construction cools better than the stock unit; C) I don't want to run the engine cooler via an earlier opening t-stat; D) The E36/7 S52 3.2L Zed cars run 'fan delete', though I think they employ a low speed circuit that kicks in the electric fan to replace the viscous fan for stop-n-go driving conditions. We will see how this next summer goes! KLBURGESS NEIL RESPONED TO WHAT GERRY WROTE: on 2/13/05 6:17 PM, Gerry <gerry@parallel-mkt.com> wrote: > Any such results for the fan delete option? Nope. I don't get stuck in traffic all that often, and the big aluminum radiator surely helps some, but still: no. Lowell S. lives in TX and he'll tell you he has no issues either. Can't imagine you'd have any problem up there in the frozen north. Fan delete option in my case means delete fan, drive car. Messing with the t-stat or fan switch calibrations aren't necessary. Neil

I had to run around getting all the parts. I haven't had any problems with overheating in stop and go traffic in 90+ deg weather in NYC. I changed the fan switch, thermostat to 80/88, alum tstat housing and got rid of the fan. -Bobby

Is it a good idea to get one of those gizmos that plugs into your lighter socket to keep everything powered-up? Mine's 7 years old now and apparently okay, but I think it's time for change before it craps out on me. Reed/Seattle 98 M3

He was driving, I was in the passenger seat. He managed to hit a bird in mid flight while driving down a highway in Montana. Smacked it with the drivers side mirror. Good thing I knew it pops back on from this listserv, he just about shit a brick!
