Hudson" <jwhud@budget.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Help with Alpine CDA 7894 Mel- Besides the Euro antenna adapter, you'll need an Alpine harness (~$15). It plugs into the recepticle on the back of your deck. You'll also need a BMW wire harness adapter (~$15). This will plug into your factory connector. There may be a harness that converts from Alpine directly to BMW, but we don't carry anything like that. Circuit City does use those type harnesses, but not sure if they'll sell over the counter or if they have one for BMW. You might check with them. If they don't sell them they might give you a brand so you could try to find one. You can buy a replacement remote ay most Alpine dealers ~$20. You'll want to use the speaker outputs directly to the amp. The wire harness adapter makes these connections for you. Nothing special you'll need to do. You will not be using any of the pre-outs unless you decide to use an aftermarket amp(s) for a sub or ???? The white wire (factory), connected to the factory deck is the REM turn-on lead. It sends a signal to the factory amp and the antenna amp to turn on. This needs to be connected to the REM lead on the Alpine deck (blue/white). If the antenna amp isn't turning on, you probably wouldn't get any AM but FM may work pretty well. There's also the possibility of a bad antenna amp (driver's side C-pillar) or just loose or corroded connection at the antenna amp. The best advice I can give you is to go to an independent Alpine dealer. You can buy or order harnesses, adapters, and Alpine parts from most authorized Alpine dealers. Not necessarily Circuit City or the likes. If you came to my store with the above circumstances, I could sell you everything you need to do your own install. Or, for an additional $30 labor, I'd do the install for you. It'd be done right, with a warranty, and you wouldn't get your hands dirty. We would also bench test the deck prior to install to make sure it works. With just the studs, > reinstallation of the exhaust manifold will be a snap. Perhaps surprisingly it's not at all hard to lift the head out with the exhaust manifolds attached. They're not all that bulky. FWIW this is the official BMW procedure (although of course we all ignore that for lots of other jobs). And if you're doing a head gasket and have no other reason to separate the exhaust manifolds and head, that also leave the option of leaving them joined. > Also, those big 6 nuts are sometimes seized as well. Don't ask me how I know. Oddly enough the 6 flange nuts on my car came right off, despite it being a winter driver with over 80K miles. Go figure. In summary, you do it your way and I'll do it mine! <g> But given the choice between 24 little hard to reach nuts and 6 big easy ones, I'll go for the easy way every time. Someone had posted a link to crutchfield where they had it listed for $379 sometime ago. Either they are sold out or discontinued, because I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where, (or even at crutchfield) I might find this? Thanks in advance. Patrick Goss 97 M3/4 Hellrotten

Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2005 11:31:46 -0800 From: "Burgess, Kim L" <kim.l.burgess@boeing.com> Subject: Climate Control Fix - Again The local Fry's supply of .47uF50V Tantalum capacitors is "out of stock". Ref http://www.benhirsch.net/m3-maintenance/e36_climate_control.htm My online search of other local suppliers has failed me. Anyone know of a good online supplier of small quantity items that is also willing to sent said item for 'reasonable cost'? Fry's online wants close to $5.00 to ship a 50-cent cap.. And a search of the digest revealed an interesting debate with regard to which type of capacitor I should really use. Andrew/John - Can you comment further? Are "metalized polyester film" capacitors polarized? John - Are you still supplying you turn signal control modules? Andrew Kalman wrote <digest #3930> "Interesting -- our conservatively rated tantalum caps (50V, where the maximum voltage was 15V on the board) would often blow up in a pyrotechnic orgy and send their tops flying through the lab, invariably landing on someone's skin <snip> I've avoided tantalums wherever possible ..." Response from John Firestone <digest #3931> "If I remember correctly, they can also catastrophically short if subject to high inrush currents as you might find in a power supply. <snip> this particular part is used in a higher impedance (and hence less stressful) watchdog timer circuit. I will probably use a metalized polyester film part <snip>" Kim L Burgess (425)342-5539

Digi-Key? Or, if you can wait until Monday, I can check my local Fry's for the cap and mail it to you (I'm heading to THill for a race this weekend). That'll cost you some beer, though <bg>. > And a search of the digest revealed an interesting debate with regard to > which type of capacitor I should really use. There's no problem with using a tantalum capacitor that you can pick up at Fry's. You can't correlate Andrew's "problem" with this application. I've used literally thousands of tantalum capacitors in the course of my career as an Electrical Engineer, and never had any "...blow up in a pyrotechnic orgy..." (when used correctly :-)).
