They are some sort of GE technology that >product a very bright beam. Yes??? Yes. And lots of "experience" including some measurements... I'm working on an article for Roundel on improving the lighting (headlighting) on the E36 series.. in doing the article I've setup a test bench where I can accurately measure the amount of light (Lumens) and the pattern of the light from E36 headlamps. So far - I've done the stock US headlamp and tried to find out how to improve it. I've taken measurements/plots of the stock 9006 lowbeam bulb, a Sylvania XtraVision and the HIR bulb (actually two of the HIRs..) The XtraVision claims "up to 30%" - I found overall not near that much and at the peak spot in the pattern, only ~18% - which really isn't visible. The HIR bulbs are available in two versions - a 55W and a 65W.. The 65W is normally used in the high-beam, but it can be fitted if you ask for the "Gonzo Option" into a low-beam. With the 55W option - you get a full 50% more light (80 lumens vs 60 for a stock bulb) [or 33% - depends on how you think about it..] With the 65W option in the low beam - the results are almost astounding.. 125 Lumens at the peak.. more than 100% more light (or 2.08x) I was worried about glare from the Gonzo option.. with good clean and polished lenses it is a non-issue. My pattern measurements show the the Gonzo option retains the stock bulb pattern (good or bad depending on how you look at it..) just a whole lot brighter. I've been running the 65W in both my high beam (where it is amazing) and in my low beam. I obviously don't use the high-beam in traffic, and I have not been flashed ONCE with the low-beam (which is better than with the factory HID's on my E39..) That's where I am today - and that part has been written up and submitted to the Roundel editors.. the next part will be on euro-light options for the E36 and should be quite interesting. Oh - if anyone has any of the higher wattage bulbs, or bling-blue bulbs they're not using and would like to donate them towards the article, that would be terrific.. and I'll mention and thank you in the article. >TIA, > >Bob Gill >97 ///M3 coupe >Philly Region SCCA >2nd Place BSP - PA State Championship 2004 Best, _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________©1946________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ - http://www.njsbmwr.org/ '98 M3c/5, '03 525iT, '87 K75S

#3. salvage - repairable - from RFKoby@aol.com

Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 14:12:32 -0500 From: RFKoby@aol.com Subject: salvage - repairable Mike, I am a long time lurker also... the exact same thing happen to me back in December. I loaned my 94 318i to my sister in-law and she rear ended another car in the snow. If she had 2 more feet, she would have stopped in time. She crushed the front grills, headlights, popped the turn signals, and folded the hood up. It took me 2 hours of careful prying and bending to get the hood open, but finally got it opened. I removed the fan shroud, and fan so it didn't rub. Beside the core support being bent back, it was driveable. The Body shop / insurance wanted $4,500 for the repair, and the value was only around $6,500. I was right on the 70% threshold to total car, and they said any incidentals would put it over the limit. I was very depressed, car was in very good condition, low miles, and spotless. I decided to keep the car. Insurance paid me the value of the car plus taxes, tiles, and fee($6,800), minus deductable ($500), and minus salvage value ($900), so I got a check for $5,400. I went to the junk yard, and spent $700 on salvage parts, and $800 for professional body shop paint, and I repaired the car myself. I came out $2,900 ahead. I got to keep the title. In the end, I still had a clear title, and the insurance company reinstated the policy with no changes. I will have a rate increase at the next premium, but my sister in-law is going to buy the car.... keep the car and fix it!! bob >-------------------- 7 -------------------- >Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 10:58:39 -0500 >From: morris.michael@TIAXLLC.com >Subject: Salvage M3 Advice/Sale > >Hello List... long time lurker here: > >About 1 week ago I "totalled" (according to my insurance co) my M3, I'll >save the details for a rainy day, but as a summary: > >I hit a guard rail head-on at about 30-35mph while at the same time >maintaining some sideways motion, (downshifted going downhill in the snow >and car rotated counter-clockwise into the uncoming lane/guardrail) and >the car rotated skimming the rear-end against the rail as well. 90% of >the damage was on the front: hood crumpled, radiator/fan broken, front >fenders damaged, hood is stuck close, but I can see that the damage stops >just past the radiator. Here in the Pacific NW there are two 'total' M3s listed on our club BB. http://www.bmwpugetsound.com/vbb/ here is the 98 http://www.bmwpugetsound.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27217 I think there was so much traffic on the 95 that _all_ of it including the shell is gone. A 95 and a 98. Both have received quite a bit of attention. The 3.0L went for $3500.00 and the 3.2L was listed for $4200.00, I believe. Vaders are popular within the 325 upgrade crowd. It's all going to depend a bit on how remote you are from an 'active' population and what you have to pay for it. Sounds like an excellent race car opportunity for some one!
