No, there are none currently (nor any that can be modified to be used in an H1 application which is what is being done with the 9011/HIR1 and 9012/HIR2 bulbs for 9005 and 9006 applications). They probably never will be either as the original market for the HIR 9011 and 9012 is extremely limited, they were never manufactured with the intention of being modified for use in 9005 and 9006 applications. I organized a group buy for these bulbs some time ago (July 2004) and have been using them since then. > I still can't see why you'd go HIR over HID? How about price? HIRs are relatively inexpensive compared to HID, HIRs are very easy to install (easily reversible) and effective. How about safety? Stock US headlight lamps were never designed to accept HIDs so they were not engineered with them in mind or the filament placement. Here are some links discussing this further: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/HID.html http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html How about the fact that HIDs are illegal to retrofit into halogen headlamps? Personally, I am a bit surprised that Don has never been brighted with "Gonzo" HIRs in his stock US E36 M3 headlight since their beam pattern isn't exactly stellar with fairly poor cutoff. I know Daniel Stern did not recommend using HIRs in US headlight assemblies like the E36 M3. I use HIRs in my 1991 318is converted to ellipsoids and appreciate the additional light and the easy to adjust beam pattern to avoid casting light onto oncoming motorists. Regards, Rich

Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 18:38:52 -0800 From: "Chris Teague" <cteague@cox.net> Subject: Engine Mount Replacement Has anyone replaced the engine mounts without using a hoist? I was wondering if I could put a 2x8 or somthing below the oilpan, and use a floor jack to hold the motor while I replace one mount at a time? Or is a hoist required? Chris 97 M3/4

They will have a different number and probably a different key in the base so they can't be "interchanged" accidently. Three reasons I can think of.. 1. LACK of $$$ - the HIR bulbs are $29/each so for $65 or so including shipping you're set to go. This was one of my primary motivations. Spending $300-1,000 for the headlights wasn't on the books at the moment, so I looked for other options. 2. Pattern - of HID conversion kits in the US headlight housing is very likely to be very poor. If someone has a kit to loan me I'll measure it.. A bad pattern HID is going to piss people off (I have enough headlight flashing with the stock HID self- leveling ones on my 5 series Touring..) I don't like to piss people off 'cause there are some real nutty ones out there. 3. Legality - won't go into a lot of detail, but you'll see less and less vendors selling "conversion kits" since NHTSA has basically outlawed them with hefty fines to the vendor. And - in states where you have inspection - I'm willing to bet I can get the HIR/Stock headlight through inspection. I'm willing to bet the HID/Stock won't pass, and I know in NJ if the inspector is at ALL awake - the euro conversion won't pass due to lack of a DOT number on the glass - BTDT on other vehicles. If anyone wants to give me HID's - I'll take them and let you know how they compare.. _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ NJ SHore BMW Riders - http://www.njsbmwr.org/ E39 Enthusiasts Group - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bmwe39/ '03 525iT, '98 M3C/5, '87 K75S

#10. Bad rotors question - from arionatof@comcast.net
Top
Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2005 04:35:13 +0000 From: arionatof@comcast.net Subject: Bad rotors question I am very puzzled about this. Hopefully someone can enlighten me. My car was in a bad accident two months ago. Got rear ended but was able to drive home with no brake issues. It took two months of wait to have it finished due to the shop's schedule. Got it back this week and it looks really good, until I drove it. Got bad pulsating vibration from the front when I apply the brake. I suspected the rotors but I wanted a professional to do it in case it is accident related. The mechanic concluded the rotors had gone bad because a spot had developed where the brake pad is, supposily this happens a lot for idle vehicles sitting under the elements. My question is why .... rotors will just go bad? Anyway, the y were replaced and it is fine now, though I can't really blame it on the accidient... -Johnny 98 M3/4 94K - On the road again. -- mailto:mclee@ieee.org
