Hawk HT 10s or 14s Spec VRs Cool Willeys etc. Im thinking of going to track pads this year, but dont want to shell out the $200 cost of entry to see if I like them. Thanks Doug

Doug, I'm sure it's safe to say you'll like them if you're looking for increased performance. I've never heard anyone say, "nah that's just too much braking I'm going back to stock pads." :-) However one thing to realize is that track pads are noisy, dusty and you need to either deal with it or learn to live with it. i.e. don't spend $3K on a set of HREs, Fikses, etc, slap on a set of Hawk blues, drive them to and from the track in the rain and then complain a few days later that the pads ruined your wheels and your car's paint job. :-) Of course there are a number of ways to deal with that, waxing your wheels, spraying pam on the wheels, not driving the car on the street with track pads, and cleaning the wheels/car immediately after the track day. And the E46 M3 owners fav. solution, cover the entire car with blue tape. Hey whatever works. BTW where do you get this blue tape? I may actually need it this year. :-) Carlos.

#3. Brake Rotors - from david kroth

Anyone ever have your rotors plated? I'm not a track junkie, so my rotors last several years. Before too long they get rusty and ugly. I'd like to have a finish applied that will keep them new looking for a long time. I've seen cad plated rotors, but frankly they don't seem to hold up well in the wet, salty northeast. Any other suggestions for plating? ===== David Kroth david_kroth@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Read only the mail you want - Yahoo! I've done black zinc (not black oxide) via a commercial plater, and they've lasted for > 10 years in California without rusting. That said, black zinc is hard to find nowadays. I'd recommend a thorough degreasing, and then painting with a hi-temp / barbeque paint. That also works well, but only prevents the hats from rusting, as you can't really coat the insides / vanes of the rotors. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Date: Tue, 01 Mar 2005 12:25:53 -0500 From: Chris Papademetrious <chrispitude@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Brake Rotors David, I tried the cheap way out and used a high-temp gray engine paint when I did all front/rear rotors/pads a couple years ago. I degreased the rotors, painted them, and lightly sanded off the paint on the friction surface. If you do it shortly after the paint is dry to the touch, it comes off very easily. I put on two light coats, sanded the friction surfaces when dry, and then cured each coat on the top of a kerosene heater. On the front Euro rotors, I masked off the aluminum hats since they don't rust. http://www.chrispitude.net/view.php?dispsize=800&album=cars&pic=m3_04_19_02_a.jpg&start=24&picindex=33&user= They all turned out great except one rear rotor, which is starting to surface-rust through the paint about a year later. I'm guessing I didn't degrease it thoroughly enough. I'd probably do it again, making sure to more thoroughly degrease the rotors first. - Chris david kroth wrote: > I just placed an order for a set of Brembo's from > James - thanks for the great price, James. > > Anyone ever have your rotors plated? I dont mind the noise as I will only use these at the track and to get to and from. I do want to stear away from Hawk Blues because of wheel and paint issues. I have already made a habit of washing my car and wheels when I return from the track. Doug

Date: Tue, 01 Mar 2005 11:50:47 -0800 From: jsf03724@san.rr.com Subject: OT: Tips for selling a car?... (Off Topic, in that it's not my M3 that we're selling. Yet. I only filled the gas tank on my M3 once in February, which makes me think maybe I should sell it as well, but that's not the point. Posted here because the group has demonstrated to be car-savvy in many arenas, so may have some thoughts.) We're selling my wife's 2001 E46 325Ci, but seem to be getting less inquries on it than we would like. The car is currently posted on autotrader.com, cars.com, roadfly.org, carlist.com, and sdbmwcca.com (for it is in San Diego). I've been taking it with me on various trips around town to get more eyeballs on it, and have had someone call that saw it while parked in my office lot. Any tips, experience, lessons learned on selling a car and generating response/feedback/visibility? Replaced it with a 2001 Z3 3.0, which doesn't make this any more M3 related. Jim 98 M3/2

It turns out on closer inspection that there is a bit of the shellac on the metal visible from the oil filler on this motor, too. No sludge, though. I guess I would still attribute this to the plastic piece over the cams on these motors. I have a couple of cars with high mileage M20 motors (135K and 227K miles...) that have been running on Redline for most of their lives, and are perfectly bare-metal clean under the valve cover.
