#1. Coolant Expansion Tank - from arionatof@comcast.net

Date: Fri, 18 Mar 2005 21:30:13 +0000 From: arionatof@comcast.net Subject: Coolant Expansion Tank Hope someone has information on this, I couldn't find it in the service manual. I am trying to replace the coolant temperature sensor with the cap/gasket. I see that the lower radiator hose is right under the screw cap. Does anyone know whether I can loosen up the expansion tank without messing with the removal of the radiator? There is a slight leak at the cap because last time I did the radiator job, I put the cap back on only to realze later that the o-ring fell out. Thanks, -Johnny 98 M3/4 95K -- mailto:mclee@ieee.org

What should I look for and how do I know a correct fit. A local race shop carries a G Force model for $249. It felt OK. I'm willing to spend some bux on safety gear. Thanks. Dave

Bell Motorsports in Oakland. http://www.bellmotorsports.com/ The Bell M2 is a very popular entry-level full-face helmet. It has a nice large eyeport for people who wear sunglasses under their helmet. The store people will help you with fitment but the bottom line is that the helmet should be snug but not painful. If you put the helmet on your head and rock it front-to-back, the skin of your forehead should move with the helmet. > A local race shop carries a G Force model for $249. I have an instructor lined up and will be running in the beginner group. My main concern will be bringing the car home as shiny as it was when I left and to not cause anyone else to have a problem by doing something stupid. Just want to learn lines and braking points at 7/10s. I'll pick up the pace in future schools. I'm also trying to decide if I should take my 2000 C5 hardtop or my E36 M3. My guess is that the E36 would be a better car to learn on since it is easier to drive fast. I can concentrate more on the track and what's going on around me. What do you think? Thanks again for the info! Bring a 528e, which would be a better car to _learn_ on since it is _harder_ to drive fast. :) But if you don't have one, bring the E36. I hope your instructor's top priorities are to teach you to look ahead as far as possible and to be as smooth as possible. Most everything else will follow from that. :) Welcome to the slippery slope! Why would it be 50v in a 12v automobile anyway? I understand that particular capacitor is used in a watchdog timer circuit and appears to be a polyester film unit. You are likely right that you don't need a 50v part. I suspect the manufacturer chose what is most common and inexpensive which is not always the lowest voltage part. A lower voltage 0.47uF part could also be the same size and cost in which case the manufacturer won't bother making it. WIMA, one of Germany's major manufacturers, doesn't offer anything less than 50V parts in their MKS 2 line - their nearest equivalent to the part in the IHKA - until you get to larger values, 1uF and up. -John '96 318is

Good selection and prices. They have a retail store in Oakland. I'll bet it's the same one Mark recommended, but not sure. I also tried on Simpson models, but I didn't like the feel of them. I guess I've got a Bell head. I've owned 3 of their helmets over the years. If you wear glasses or may wear sunglasses, be sure to consider a helmet with a large eyeport like the Bell M2 or Simpson Voyager or ????. Last fall, running T-hill in the late afternoon, I was getting blinded coming up to T9. It was the 1st time I'd run T-hill when the sun was that low in the sky. I had to hold my hand up to block the sun. I'd rather have my hands on the wheel or shift knob! Anyway, good luck and have a ball. I'll be there with TrackMasters on 5/13.
