Maybe not. With a little money for the Conforti injector and cold intake I am not convinced at all that I want the E46M3. I've driven it a couple times and have not been willing to consider changing. If you want an E36M3 that rivals the E46M3 get Conforti's cam kit with injector for cam kit and cold air intake for cam kit. It can't cost as much as a new E46. To me, the E46M3 feels heavier as well. YMMV. -- =========================== georgercarrjr@earthlink.net

The "same size" helmet with Bell is so tight that I can't even think. Moral of the story, besides me having a giant head and Jim having a pinhead (haha!!!), is to try them on before purchasing. Jonathan L. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Jim Bassett" <jim@jimbassett.com> Agreed. That's another reason why I like the Bell helmets - they seem to come in smaller sizes that some other manufacturers. They were the about the only one that was able to fit my pinhead :-)

Frustrated with not finding anything decent (IMHO), I then considered a new E46 with the Competition Package. Found a salesman & dealer prepared to give me a fantastic deal on an ordered one, and at about the same time I found a 99 M3 with fewer than 30k miles. If the e36 checks out, I am going to go with that, but am interested in the opinions of the group, plus was wondering if anyone would be as kind as to run a CarFax report on the VIN? Mine stopped sending the tach signal and coolant temp signals to the cluster. However, the early part of the failure mode sounds like yours, a very irratic tach needle which would sometimes drop to zero and then start working again out of the blue. My dealership told me it was the cluster which I replaced only to have the problem persist. A used DME solved my problem. I had no running problems, at all though. -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

I've driven a few E46M3s in different mod levels on track and the only one that felt decent to me was the Dinan S2 equipped car with Brembos, race seats and R-compounds. For "feel," I'd still take my car over that one any day of the week, even on street tires. The E46M3 is certainly faster, but it doesn't feel like it, it feels heavier and it's just (to me) not as rewarding. Could be the years I've had my car, but everything I do in it just feels like an extension of myself. I don't get that in any of the E46s I've driven. As a street car, however, the E46M3 is probably a great choice for many reasons. And, for what it's worth, I know of some people who've driven the E46M3 with competition package and have been very enthusiastic about it, claiming that it's the way the car should've felt all along. I've heard the same thing, which is why I was a little disappointed when I drove my student's Comp package car at the GGC Infineon school. It seemed very soft.* Part of why it feels so heavy compared to an E36 (other than the fact that it is, in fact, heavier) is that it's wider, so it feels a bit less "tossable." There's also some vicious markup going on with the Comp package cars. BMW of SF had a one month ago with a $71K sticker (including $5K dealer markup). I kid you not. - Mark * this could easily be a driver calibration problem, given how stiff my race car is

I like my E36 ('97) and I've had other BMW's. My favorite was an E30 M3. Felt better than the E36, but when I sold it, it was a 16 year old car. Everyone has different reasons for wanting a particular car. I like the E46 and even considered buying one. But the engine problems scare me off because I'll be buying used. Anyway, It's a tough decision. I should have such problems.
