#1. Oxygen sensors - CEL - from Neil Maller

Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 09:01:24 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Oxygen sensors - CEL After the guibo replacement that I whined on about a couple of days ago I took the car out for a good thrash on some country roads. As usual it ran like a raped ape. The next day when I started it up it immediately threw a CEL which the Peake Code Reader translated to: 3d After-cat oxygen sensor heater cylinders #4-6 4F After-cat oxygen sensor heater cylinders #1-3 (I suspect the CEL came on at that particular point because certain faults need to persist through a defined number of operating cycles in order to trigger the CEL.) Since the exhaust had to come off for the guibo ordeal the oxygen sensors had of course been disconnected, and in fact for other reasons they were removed from the exhaust system altogether and set aside. However the my felines didn't pee on them, I didn't dip them in battery acid, and I generally don't see any reason why both should choose to expire simultaneously. The after-cat sensors only monitor cat performance, so engine function should be unaffected. However I hate to drive with the CEL on all the time. (Yeah, yeah: black tape!) I'm also assuming that the cats themselves are working OK since it's the sensor heater circuits, which I believe only operate during start-up, that are indicating a problem. Before I throw a possibly unnecessary $200 BMWSUU at this and buy new O2 sensors, does anyone have a suggestion as to what could be going on? In examining them, I noticed numerous burrs and blobs of soder inside the headers from the welding process. Would these have an adverse affect on the flow of exhaust? Should I take the headers to a machine shop and have the inside polished to remove them or am I worrying about something that isn't really going to make any difference? It seems very odd that these puppies would expire at the very same time. Quick question: When you reconnected the sensors were you careful to make sure you connected them to the proper socket? If switched, this would trip the fault. Just a thought. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA BSP Champ '01 and '02

As I understand, the clutch and brakes share fluid. My p-car has a similar system and has a separate bleed valve for the clutch. Does the M3 have one? Where might I find it? TIA, Graeme

#8. Fender rolling tool(s)... - from Pat Buthmann
Top
Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 11:59:07 -0500 From: Pat Buthmann <pbuthmann@gmail.com> Subject: Fender rolling tool(s)... Gang, I'm looking for a place to possibly purchase a fender rolling tool, such as the unit that TireRack can occasionally rent out. IE, bolts to the wheel hub, and basically a skateboard / inline skate wheel for rolling the inner fender lip. Being in Canada, however, renting one from Tirerack isn't an option, so I'd like to look at purchasing one directly, new or used. Any ideas on a source to find such a beast? Thanks, Pat
