They are currently $312 with a LIFETIME warranty (which I doubt applies to race cars). I was careful to measure rack displacement at a couple of places in the rack's travel, and the steering ratio was identical to the one that I took out of the car. Same here, I did this to mine about three years ago. Haven't touched it since. For a little extra peace of mind, you can run a bead of black water sealant around the sender threads on the inside. The one disadvantage of this setup is that you get no reading until the thermostat opens, about 5 minutes after starting. The factory sender in the block reads right away. andy r. 98 m3/2

Assuming I know what I am looking for, I don't see any unusual movement in the universal joins in the steering shaft. I had my wife, Patty, turn the wheel while I resisted the movement and watched the two universal points. Perhaps I wouldn't be able to resist enough? The only problem with this tool is that if the afflicted flare nut is one of those on a welded bracket in the wheel well you may not be able to get the bulky ViseGrip jaws on to it. One key is to use really good quality penetrating oil, either Würth or Kroil, maybe PB Blaster. WD-40 or other cheap penetrants are useless for this. I've sometimes also had good luck using an adjustable crescent wrench, oddly enough, because you can set it to eliminate all play at the nut. Even the best fitting flare nut wrench has some play, and those nuts are soft. Several years ago none of the above worked and I totally buggered up the nut in the left rear wheel well. This is on a hard line which goes all the way forward to the ABS pump in one continuous run, so replacing it would have been no picnic. I cut off as little from the end of the hard line as possible, put on a new flare nut, and borrowed a flaring tool from a friend to reform the end. Fortunately BMW makes a loop in the line back there, so I reshaped that to get just enough length back so that the line would reach its bracket.
