(cobalt -> hawk HT-14) I just bought a set of HT 14's for the front and a set of HT 10's for the rear of my car and have run one event thus far (Road Atlanta) on them and am very impressed with the pads. By far the best set up I've run, pad-wise, on my car. They bit great, stopped me hard, didn't fade at all, and really allowed me to decrease my braking zone. My confidence in the brakes is much higher with them. Sorta pricey, but worth it in my estimation. Kurt Resener Louisville, KY '95 ///M3 ''01 X5 '97 Audi A6 Quattro Avant '75 Mercedes 280c

I noticed a distinct lack of brake dust on my wheels throughout the weekend, comparatively speaking. I did encounter rain on the way home, and it was a couple days until I could wash the car. The brake dust came right off without having to chip it off.... Kurt Resener Louisville, KY '95 ///M3 ''01 X5 '97 Audi A6 Quattro Avant '75 Mercedes 280c

I ran HT-14s on the front of my racecar (Stoptech's) with HT-10s in the rear. Again, the best braking combination I think I've ever had, and never ran into any lack of brakes, under any conditions. Once the new racecar is done and built, that will be the combination I go with again. I preferred the HT-14s due to greater initial bite over the HT-10s, and found them to be my favorite pad of all time (and I've tried a bunch). The HT-14s were the first pad that made me forget about PF-97's. :-) Now, this was a dedicated racecar, so I wasn't terribly worried about noise or dusting, but I never seemed to have any issues with heavy dust and corrosion, and this car was raced in the rain on those very same pads, with no issues. I highly recommend them. Pat On 4/26/05, KResener@aol.com <KResener@aol.com> wrote: > Date: Tue, 26 Apr 2005 09:56:59 EDT > From: KResener@aol.com > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Track pad experience??? I think you're right. It's distinctly possible that I had them over-ducted, too, so they'd have to heat up at the beginning of the braking zone, giving the impression of extreme non-linearity. Maybe I'll try them again at some point. When I last bought pads the HT-14's were not yet available for the 325 caliper. If they are this time around, I'll get those instead. > That being said back on the topic of driving on race pads all the time > I > would say no Hawk *race* pad is good for that. The parts guys were very helpful and easy to work with, but most importantly, had great prices and included free shipping to orders over $100. The beat Pacific BMW prices, and I didn't have to pay shipping or sales tax! I highly recommend them. Ask for Steve in parts! Drive Safely, Raza

(cobalt -> hawk HT-14) I have used and still do use HT10s and HT14s on my I-stock '95 M3. HT10s on the rear. HT10s on the front for long races or where the temps are cool/cold. HT14s when it is hot and it is a sprint race. HT14s have great initial bite but this may cause you to overslow the car. I prefer the HT10s and have no problems with pedal modulation, etc. (see results from November Phoenix race in Roundel). I run Toyo RA-1s for what that's worth. The HT10s last forever and I don't find the initial bite to be all that bad on a 3175lb car plus driver. My wife preferred PF90s back when you could get them as they had a sharper initial bite (a confidence builder). What do I mean by "last forever" regarding the HT10 wear? I ran two practices, a qualifying, a 2-hr enduro, and a sprint race w/minimal pad wear at PIR. That's a lot of laps at PIR and it has three pretty heavy braking zones per lap (fourth to second gear). I can get two sets of fronts for every set of rears! I've heard good things about the Cobalts, but I've never run them (risk adverse now that I found something I really like). Cheers, Kirk Lachman '95 M3 #21 I-stock

Are you doing this for altruistic reasons, ie. you want to save the world's oil or reduce greenhouse emissions? If you are doing it for financial reasons, do the math. Replacing a car with a more economical one may make sense, but adding another car to the fleet rarely does. You will probably pay your next 2 years worth of gas costs just in sales tax buying the car. Then factor in capitalization cost, depreciation, license plate fees, taxes and insurance. That will cost you way more than the delta in gas costs. Really hard to come out ahead. Maybe you really just want another car. I can't argue with that. Carl Stern
