We have to (seemingly) depend on the Japanese (or the Chinese, let's see what's going to be coming from them) for "hybrid" cars that will save gasoline, and of course we have to depend on OPEC (Saudi Arabia, largely) for oil. When are we going to get smart and just take over the Arabian peninsula. I mean, heck, they hate us now anyway... (tongue planted firmly in cheek) Tom Reynolds Sand Springs, OK P.S. I would be most interested in post-1997 cars with less than 80,000 miles (the lower the amount, the better) and black interiors. I will also consider cars with Hellrot paint. Thank you for reading my request, Suneal

#3. Pirelli Corsas: Revisited - from twisty M3

Date: Tue, 26 Apr 2005 14:32:39 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: Pirelli Corsas: Revisited This may be irrelevant info now that the prices on these tires have gone WAY up. I got my 255/40-17s for $128 each from TireRack, but they're now priced at $246 each. Anyway, I thought I'd give my revised impressions now that they've seen a few track events. I originally bought them simply because they were so inexpensive and I wanted my new track wheels shipped with tires on them. After the first event, I thought $128 was great and would've bought them again. After three events, however, I wouldn't touch them again. They were fine for the first two events (Sears Point and Willow Springs), but have since turned downright spooky. Even when they were good, they had a bit of an odd feel. Plenty of grip at 8-10/10ths, but at 7/10ths and below, they felt a bit "wobbly." Almost like there was too much tread, but there wasn't. Great lateral grip at speed, however. They only seem to have about 2 weekends of good life. I was at Buttonwillow just over a week ago, and this was the first time I was spooked by my tires. They took over a lap to heat up, and would just let go before that. Then they'd only have decent grip for about 15-20 minutes. After that, they made for great entertainment for my passengers, but it was almost like snap oversteer. It was a controllable release, so there wasn't too much drama, but the initial release was very quick. Now even on the street they have seemingly less grip than street tires in the morning (been to busy and lazy to change back lately). I'm now just going to save my street tires and burn these up until my new track tires arrive... and will enjoy my own little drifting challenge at the LA Autox this weekend. ;) Experiment over... Good ol' RA-1s on their way back. Jonathan L.

The car refuses to idle down low. As long as we are above 2000rpm, the car runs fine. But it does not idle well.. It stumbles, and dies.. As per the instructions that were on the web, everything looks ok. I am supposed to do a driving school this weekend at Summit point, and my car is still in pieces!!! If you have done this upgrade, I would appreciate any thoughts... BTW, the car is Sharked, conforti type intake, and exhaust. Thanks in advance! Thanks Mo

From my experience the PF97's feel like they have a lot more braking power than the HT10's. The 97's do create a lot of radioactive dust that will destroy your car when it gets wet. I just bought a new set of PF97's for my car :) another data point. (cobalt -> hawk HT-14) Doing my first track day next month and currently have the stock pads on the 98 M3. What should I get for a DE type pad? Hawk HP Plus? I don't want anything to do with corrosive dust. Just looking for a good pad that will hold up for a days worth of 20-30 minutes sessions for a beginning driver where laps times are unimportant (for now!:)). Track will be ThunderHill, if that matters. Hawk HP Plus and Porterfield R4S seem like decent choices. Any opinions? Should I be looking at HT-10s or are they for more hardcore track cars? Thanks for any input. Dave 98 M3/4

Nothing. As long as you have more than 50% remaining on the stock pads, they'll be more than sufficient for your first track school. If you have less than 50% remaining, put a fresh set of stock pads on. Jim Bassett

I agree - the stock pads are perfect for a beginner. You'll know when the stock pads aren't good enough anymore. Then what you should do, instead of replacing them, is work on your braking technique. Then, after that, when they're no longer good enough again, go to something more track-oriented. :) - Mark ----- mark@pdc-racing.net Check out my JustRacing Home Page at: http://www.justracing.com/homepage/mdadgar
