I take a piece of plastic bag and put it under the cap on the brake fluid reservoir after first removing the level sensor. That does a pretty good job of keeping most of the brake fluid where it belongs. -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

I think you should beat the dealer up for as much as a discount as possible on a E46 M3. Those cars are for sale everywhere for much less then NADA, KBB, or Edmunds. The exploding engine issues have given the car a weaker resale and you can find several good examples all over the net Clyde 98 m3/4 >From: Tom Reynolds <kjtar@earthlink.net> >Reply-To: Tom Reynolds <kjtar@earthlink.net> >To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] 98 M3 FS what do you think? >Date: Tue, 3 May 2005 17:35:51 -0500 > >Date: Tue, 03 May 2005 17:33:31 -0700 >From: Tom Reynolds <kjtar@earthlink.net> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] 98 M3 FS what do you think? > >Don't a lot of states figure it on NADA values when new? I wouldn't trust Kelly Blue Book at all, in my opinion, it is not very accurate. To get a decent ball park figure, I use edmunds.com (just my opinion). Regarding E46 M3, personally I think high 40s for 2004 is kind of steep given that last month we got a 2003 Silver/gray SMG Convertible M3 with 17K miles and 19inch wheels, w/all options including navigation for $42K. Plus you can turn around the E36 for around $17.5K without any issues (try BMW forums to see what kind of responses you get). Goodluck. Hi, I don't know what the options are on the new M3 but Kelly prices it at $49K with nothing selected and 20K miles, in my ZIP (94541). As far as the old car. I think you should be able to do better. I paid $16K for my car a year ago. ('97 Techno Violet with nothing) I would pay $18 if I was looking, esp. since yours has the big brake kit. But, is a private sale worth the hassle? YMMV, but it may not be. Kent

#5. Fuel Pump - from Rich Dorffer

Better keep looking for better mechanics... Fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel flowing through them (not sloshing around them). So, as long as there is fuel in the tank (even if only a tiny bit) and the fuel can be picked up through your fuel pump intake tube, your fuel pump is safe. Funny thing is, the cars and the fuel pumps, just don't run very long when out of fuel... :-) I had the fuel pump in my 318is die recently. Indication prior to dying ---> NONE. I came to a stop at a red light, siting there, the car died and couldn't be restarted. Original fuel pump dead at 15 years of age and 194,000 miles. Later, Rich - runs all my cars down to the last gallon before refilling...don't believe any of the fuel tank myths (running low on fuel, sediment, filling up at gas stations when they were recently refilled by tanker trucks, etc.)

If you're going to be under the dash for more than 5 minutes (which is certainly the case here) consider removing the driver's seat entirely. It's two nuts, two bolds and some electrical connectors (do NOT turn the ignition on while the seat is out - you'll throw a code). That way you can lay down on the floor on your back with feet up on the rear seat in relative comfort compared to kneeling and twisting from the outside of the car. Plus, with the seat out you'll get to: - vacuum up all the bagel crumbs under the seat - recover $0.87 in change that's fallen down there over the years. - discover strange and wonderful things left behind by the previous owner. In my used M3 I found a wrapped cigar, a credit card and a pep-O-mint lifesaver. David Kroth david_kroth@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
