#1. Clunk Clunk - RESOLVED - from david kroth
Top
Date: Sat, 7 May 2005 10:25:20 -0700 (PDT) From: david kroth <david_kroth@yahoo.com> Subject: Clunk Clunk - RESOLVED The short answer: the springs had slipped off their lower perches and I didn't notice. The long answer: As I said in my original post, I changed the rear shocks. Just the shocks - not the springs. I never touched the springs. However, when I let the suspension droop to R&I the shocks, the springs shifted off their lower perches. Imagine them cocked out about an inch at the bottom. As I said in my original post I had my wife drive the car in and out of the yard slowly while I listened down low next to the rear wheels. I could hear the clunk coming from the hub area, but couldn't isolate it. So, I completely removed the rear shocks and went for a slow drive around the block. It was a very bouncy ride but what a racket! CLUNKETY KLUNK! Ah, the light goes on! Put the car back up in the air, give the springs a whack with the heel of my hand and "pop" they fell right back in place. At this point I wanted to make sure they were really seated properly so I pulled them out, cleaned the spacers and perches (lots of dirt and stones in there after 8 years) and reinstalled. Put the shocks back in and buttoned it all up. Went for a final test drive and the rear end is tight as a duck's ass. Very nice. Tomorrow, the fronts... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Small Business - Try our new resources site! http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/resources/

My outer- uppers were shot and doing that untraceable klunking thing, and replacing those cured it. I was able to unbolt the arms and wiggle the center bearing and get a pronounced clicking.

#5. E36 M3 gearbox precision?? - from AVUSM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Sun, 8 May 2005 10:15:57 EDT From: AVUSM3@aol.com Subject: E36 M3 gearbox precision?? Raza - Surely you are kidding when you claim the E36 M3 gearbox is the most precise out there. No E36 M3 shifter (stock or otherwise) I have driven has come close to the precision of the S2000 (1st place) or the NSX (2nd place) setups. Smoothness is another mater entirely, and in that area I would give our shifter pretty good marks. The only reason I have survived 80+ track days in my car without a money shift is that I have a reinforced tranny mount setup which limits tranny roll and I have a fairly conservative shift speed. I have lost count of the number of people I have met at the track (some highly skilled) who have made a money shift in an E36 due to the lack of precision in the shift/gearbox combo. (kinda long and venting) As far as the BMW gearbox being a bad design, I disagree. Among the numerous manual cars I've driven including S2000s, NSXs, Porsche 911s, Nissan 300zx TTs, Supra TTs, none can match the smoothness and precision of a properly maintained or serviced BMW shifter. Every other shifter is either balky, notchy, completely vague or require way too much effort to put into gear; it is always a pleasure to drive a BMW spec gearbox. I take the idea of a remote shifter as a big plus as it isolates much of the vibration and noise associated with a direct lever gearbox. In the end, it comes down to preference. I am 100% satisfied with my current shifter setup. And I'm sure once I change the tranny oil (it seems rather old) it can only get better. Drive Safely, Raza

#6. Door handle gasket replacement - from rickd
Top
Date: Sun, 8 May 2005 11:29:31 -0400 From: "rickd" <rickd@swfla.rr.com> Subject: Door handle gasket replacement Anyone done this? There's a "mouse hole" on the rear facing portion of the door where, its said, a small "hooked tool" releases the door handle. Once released, gasket replaced, does the handle somehow snap back in? I'd like to avoid door panel removal as penalty for a step ill taken.

I have this somewhere in the garage and can probably take a picture if you want. However, the biggest issue you'll encounter is not knowing where everything is and how the mechanism works. The hooked tool will basically push a sliding lock that locks with the door handle cover. There are a lot of things, surfaces, etc there and seeing through a tiny hole will prove difficult. Perhaps Ron Stygar has pictures of what you'll be trying to accomplish. Once you slide the lock to the unlocked position, the cover will come out and you just reinstall and slide the lever back to the locked position.
