Umm Mike, much of that would depend on where you're located. The design issues do depend on what class of racing you're considering. For instance Stock (and I think Prepared?) classes in BMW Club Racing don't allow tying the rear section of the rollcage into the suspension mounts, and there are a million other such considerations. The BMW regs are available as pdf's from the BMW CCA web site. While the various uprated tranny mounts, 'enforcers' etc. are a step up in preventing unwanted tranny rotation, since it appears the root cause of the issue is the 'triangle' mounting arrangement that allows the tranny rotation. Bimmerworlds 'driveline stabilizer' would seem to be a good remedy. Not the easisest install, but looks good. Anybody able to offer first person results? http://www.bimmerworld.com/html/driveline-stabilizer.htm

If you're in NorCal, this one is a no-brainer: www.tcdesignfab.com Tony is an artist and his pricing is very reasonable. You'll thank us. :-) I haven't been able to get the race car in for a cage yet, but he's done some other work on both it and the M3, and of course he's done many of my friend's cages. Mike, There are lots of different rules, but the basics are that "Showroom Stock" classes like T2 (SCCA) or I-Stock (BMW CCA) allow bolt-ins, while higher classes generally require welded. The number of attachment points varies, too, with stock classes permitting fewer. How wild do you want to get? Whatever you do, be sure you allow for a seat that fits you right, the best six-point belts you can find, and a HANS system, too. They only have to be useful once. For the stock classes, I bet you'll have to remove some of what you've already got on the car (Big brakes? LTW flywheel? Euro rotors? Pulley? Euro HFM? Coilovers?). In the faster classes, well, the size of your wallet had better be proportionate to how fast you want to go, and you're NOT going to drive it to the track. If you're serious about a cage (and why the heck not?), check out the best shops. At least two of them are sponsors of this list. I'd start with Elephant and Bimmerworld. There are others, too, but THEY are not list sponsors! Dave Hogg

#9. Strut Bearing Installation Question - from Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net
Top
Date: Wed, 11 May 2005 21:45:15 -0400 From: <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Strut Bearing Installation Question I have had the TC Kline trackline kit in my '96 M3 for several years. I have been reviewing all the suspension components, and on disassembly of the strut found the large washer under the bearing cap fractured on both sides. I have already purchased new strut bearings but neglected to get the washers, so I sourced something close from the local hardware store. On assembly if I torque the top nut to 48 ft lbs, as I understand the manual specifies, the bearing cap will NOT spin freely. Looking at the design, it makes sense to me that if nut is torqued too much the strut bearing will not spin freely. So, my question is, am I using too much torque, or is the washer something special or other? The replacement washer is larger in diameter than the base of the strut bearing cap, as the original was. The washer likely fractured due to too much torque originally, right? Thanks! If you're talking about that big washer that looks like a four leaf clover (well, kinda), it has curvature to it on one side. So if you installed it upside down, that could crack it. Or, the only other possibility is if it somehow got hung up on the threads as you tightened the nut... BTW, those washers are f*cking expensive!
