It had visible ripples and was easily chipped. When I got my M3, it needed a windshield so I insisted on a BMW unit. The OEM window is no better than the Pilkington one for chips, it a little better for ripples over the center, the has really, really bad distorsion at the outer edges by the A-Pillars. Overall, I'd say it's a wash which one was better. While they were doing the installation, I asked the technician, who claimed to have 10+ year experience installing windshields, about the "factory windshield vs aftermarket winshield" issue. His answer was that there are only two companies in the world producing auto winshield glass and that both auto manufacturer's and aftermarket brands purchase their windshields from these same two sources. So whether you buy factory or aftermarket glass, you're getting the same product made on the same assembly line. Does anyone know for sure if this guy was bullshitting me or is there any truth to the story? ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

It could be the Vanos, but it could also be the water pump. The water pump in my 95 M3 had been replaced 2.5 years ago with a then-new design with a metal impeller - but it went bad 2 months ago. It also seemed to be fine at idle, but would growl badly above 2K RPM. Best of luck. Dave Bell 95 M3

I just went to my first ever track event at ThunderHill on Wednesday and had a great time!!! I posted a couple pics on Bimmerforums at: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4210050#post4210050 Let me know what you think of em'... Fellow list member Scott McClung was my instructor and really helped me find some pace throughout the day. Man, you watch races on TV and you think, "I can do that." Once you feel the forces and the speed ripping down the straight at 115 with a corner rushing up, you get a serious reality check. By the end of the day, I felt pretty good about the lines I was taking (or trying to take, in some cases) and was carrying some pretty good pace into T1 and T8 (~85 mph was my best)which were the pucker corners to me. I also got pretty comfortable with that spooky blind T9 and could keep up with others. Then every once in a while, a ZO6 would zing on by and remind you where you stand in the pecking order of motorsports. I know I could have taken a couple of trhe fast corners quicker but I didn't want to push my luck on the first day. Scott remined me to focus on lines and speed would come naturally. I have a whole new appreciation of what it must be like to drive LeMans in the rain at night, or how the heck those F1 guys go through Eu Rouge at Spa flat out at 180 mph, no lifting. I'm hooked. I've got to get back out there. I appreciate all of the tips I've received from this list in setting up my car, such as brake pads, etc. It really helped make for a safe fun and very exciting experience. The M3 makes a damn nice car to learn on. I was torn about taking it or my 2000 C5 hardtop. I think I made the right choice. Drive to the track, adjust camber plates, check lug nuts and tires pressure, haul ass. Readjust camber plates, check lug nuts, drive home. Take kids to school and pick up groceries the next day. I love this car! Dave DeBuhr 98 M3/4

We don't want any list members (or anyone else for that matter) ending up in this situation! http://www.coloradopantera.com/cecapmp050705.html Don't know the exact circumstances, but the incident happened in the middle of a big sweeping 75+mph corner. My speculation is the driver went in too fast, chickened out and lifted... He would have been much, much better going straight off the outside of the corner. Keep the shiny side up! Graeme

Dave, Welcome to the very slippery slope of attending track events. I still remember the first one I ever did and I felt the same as you. I remember having the E36 M3 out there and my 80 year old instructor was faster than me in his old E30 325. I realized right then how much I didn't know.
