Interestingly, my very first "hit" was with Jim at Laguna. I've been consumed ever since. Like I said on BF.C, your car is gorgeous! I love the front camber, the way it sits, and the 8.5 LTWs all around look particularly good. Hopefully I'll try to emulate with my Alpine M3/4! :) Keep the shiny side up! Drive Safely, Raza

Dave, Welcome to the very slippery slope of attending track events. I still remember the first one I ever did and I felt the same as you. I remember having the E36 M3 out there and my 80 year old instructor was faster than me in his old E30 325. I realized right then how much I didn't know. Enjoy your new found addiction and when people ask remind them it is a hobby, not an addiction. I just went to my first ever track event at ThunderHill on Wednesday and had a great time!!! I posted a couple pics on Bimmerforums at: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4210050#post4210050 Let me know what you think of em'... Fellow list member Scott McClung was my instructor and really helped me find some pace throughout the day. Man, you watch races on TV and you think, "I can do that." Once you feel the forces and the speed ripping down the straight at 115 with a corner rushing up, you get a serious reality check. By the end of the day, I felt pretty good about the lines I was taking (or trying to take, in some cases) and was carrying some pretty good pace into T1 and T8 (~85 mph was my best)which were the pucker corners to me. I also got pretty comfortable with that spooky blind T9 and could keep up with others. Then every once in a while, a ZO6 would zing on by and remind you where you stand in the pecking order of motorsports. I know I could have taken a couple of trhe fast corners quicker but I didn't want to push my luck on the first day. Scott remined me to focus on lines and speed would come naturally. I have a whole new appreciation of what it must be like to drive LeMans in the rain at night, or how the heck those F1 guys go through Eu Rouge at Spa flat out at 180 mph, no lifting. I'm hooked. I've got to get back out there. I appreciate all of the tips I've received from this list in setting up my car, such as brake pads, etc. It really helped make for a safe fun and very exciting experience. The M3 makes a damn nice car to learn on. I was torn about taking it or my 2000 C5 hardtop. I think I made the right choice. Drive to the track, adjust camber plates, check lug nuts and tires pressure, haul ass. Readjust camber plates, check lug nuts, drive home. Take kids to school and pick up groceries the next day. I love this car! A guy I know took his E46M3 to THill and loved it. He's trying to get me and a coworker (E36M3 and 993 respectively) to go to a school on July 28th. The OP went to a "Hooked on Driving" event and 7/28 is a THill HPDS. 1. What separate the different organizers? Are some more organized than others? Do some attract more of a certain vehicle than others? 2. I wanted to attend a BMWCCA DE, but I notice you have to take the car control clinic first, but it's not offered very often. 3. Are spectators allowed? We thought about going as spectators on 7/28 and then maybe participate in a future event. Thanks.

Yes. :) Seriously, there are a lot of options with varying quality. Just like with cars. :) > 2. GGC BMW CCA has a Thunderhill school the weekend of August 20/21, for which I'll be opening registration soon. The Car Control Clinic is required first and there will be one scheduled in advance of the Thunderhill school. If you absolutely cannot make the CCC, register for the Thunderhill school anyway and we'll figure something out (generally, that means we'll pair you with a senior instructor). > 3. Depends on who's running the event, but the answer is usually "you betcha!". - Mark Driving Events Coordinator, GGC BMW CCA ----- mark@pdc-racing.net Check out my JustRacing Home Page at: http://www.justracing.com/homepage/mdadgar

Heck, the next best thing to driving is riding along :-) At the CCA schools you can come out and get a ride with an instructor (only instructors are allowed to take passengers). For sure try to sign up for a school, but also definitely try to come out to check it out and grab a ride at least. As an offer, I *may* be at Sears Point on either Aug 6 or 7, running in NASA's HPDE Group 4 (to go "exercise" the car in-between races :-)), and would be more than happy to give anyone a tour around the track <bg>. Cheers, Jim Bassett
