#2. transmission mount cross member cracked... - from Theodore Serbinski
Top
Date: Sat, 14 May 2005 17:24:35 -0400 From: Theodore Serbinski <stanson@gmail.com> Subject: transmission mount cross member cracked... guys, was installing the xbrace this afternoon and i glanced back and noticed my transmission mount... that entire brace (correct me if i'm wrong but i believe this is the part: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CD93&mospid=47504&btnr=23_0118&hg=23&fg=10), was completely cracked on side and cracking on the other! ok few questions now... how could this have happened? granted the car has almost 100k miles on it and i drive it spirited, is it just a normal wear and tear type thing? the crack appears to be fairly recent, because there is no dirt on the cracked part, so i'm guessing within the last hundred+ miles or so. as a result, has there been other things that could have been likely damaged? and the final question, what should i do in addition to replacing it, i see UUC has some additional transmission mounts, should i upgrade to those or something else? is this an OEM part this brace or can i buy something better? anything else to fix with it? and to think right now i'm putting on a new AA Gen III exhaust and i can't drive my car.... :( thanks! ted

(ie - all cyclically loaded aluminum parts will fail, it's just a question of time.) Jeremy // how could this have happened?

I thinking of either a Momo Storm or a Rob Knob? One question, what are the advantages of a weighted shift knob, such as the Rob Knob? Also do Rob Knobs mount with a set screw like Momo? Will

Just got back from a great couple of days at T-hill. TrackMasters Racing on Fri and visiting with the CCA CR guys and NASA group on Sat. Made some new friends and met Donna Seely from our list. > > Can someone explain the basics of taking my car to the track? > > A guy I know took his E46M3 to THill and loved it. He's trying to get me and a coworker (E36M3 and 993 respectively) to go to a school on July 28th. The OP went to a "Hooked on Driving" event and 7/28 is a THill HPDS. > > 1. What separate the different organizers? Are some more organized than others? Do some attract more of a certain vehicle than others? > There are many groups that run HPDEs. I've been to the SCCA HPDEs (put on by T-hill), TrackMasters Racing (instructor) and UnlimitedLaps. All are great for beginners, safe and organized well. There are many others like Hooked On Driving and Green Flag Racing. You'll find a wide variety of cars from compact imports to full-on race cars. > 3. Are spectators allowed? We thought about going as spectators on 7/28 and then maybe participate in a future event. Spectators have been allowed, no cost, at all the events I've been to. Many groups allow ride alongs. It's a good way to learn the line. The next TrackMasters event at T-hill is 7/29. www.trackmasters-racing.com Come on out. Jay
