#3. Considering coming back into the fold - from Scott M
Top
Date: Thu, 19 May 2005 00:12:13 -0700 From: Scott M <smlists@pacbell.net> Subject: Considering coming back into the fold Since owning the '98 M3/4 that Dave is now enjoying on the street and track I have been off playing with M5's and Z06's. The Z06 was the perfect sports car for me, but I am realizing I don't really need a sports car - I need a good street car that is still fun to drive. I drive a lot during the day to customers for account calls (outside sales) but rarely need to take more than 1 person with me. So the vette works fine from that perspective, but is a bit outrageous should my customers or sales reps see me in it... But it really is too much car to be putting around town in - a complete waste of a lot of $$ that I have let sit more than drive over the last year I've owned it. Averaging 6K miles / year while my full sized SUV is seeing triple that. I would like to get to 50/50 or less on the SUV. I have kids, so weekends are generally spent with the family or at least with the kids along for the ride. Older kids, 8 and 10 now, so soccer games all over town and other such fun. We spend a fair amount of time out of town - skiing in the winter, camping and other vacations in the summer. The large SUV is handy for such use, and is required to tow my race car. The other reason the Z06 doesn't make sense - I have a C4 race car for fun at the track. So I will be selling the 2004 Z06 soon if anyone has interest. But the primary reason for the post is to solicit feedback from the group. I have missed my M3 since I let it go, so I am strongly leaning towards getting another one. Sometimes I get worried that the cars are getting a bit older now and could run into heavier maintenance, but they do seem to be quite robust, maybe some electrical quirks here and there. So I do have the occasional thought about going with a 330i sport / 5-speed and calling up TurnerMotorsports to make it handle better and maybe closer to an E36 M3. Advantage is roomier interior - more rear seat room, I could actually use it as a business car instead of my SUV - and newer platform, better chassis design, nicer interior. I could even get a ZHP if I wanted to - I would have to determine if the stock suspension settings would be adequate for my needs or not - probably would be for a street car. I was thinking about an E46 M3 and could go that direction, but I would like to pull some cash out of the Z06 to help fund some work on my race car. OR - I could go back to what I know works for me - E36 M3. This would be my primary driver, but would not be needed as my business vehicle - I still have my full sized SUV for that. 2004 Nissan Armada - nice SUV. I am debating coupe vs. sedan this time. I love the looks of the coupe and there seem to be more to choose from - especially with 5-speeds. Also I could go with a '99 and have the newest possible E36 M3 if I found the right car. I like that all coupes have fold down seats, so I can stash my road bike in there - I ride about 2-3 days a week, so generally have my bike with me more often than not. Sedans have that as an option, but again limits the selection of cars to choose from that much more. I really need the back seat for the kids. For those with coupes and kids who are old enough to do it all themselves - is it any big deal? Seems easy enough to flip the lever and let them climb on back there - the window isn't that bad either. The thing I like most about the coupe is the Vadar seats - so much better than the sedan seats. Anyway - thoughts on any of this? Scott

The Toyo Tires/Turner Motorsport M3 will be driven by Will Turner in numerous Club Racing National races starting May 28 at Nelson Ledges in Ohio. The T2 class is comprised of performance sedans and coupes with only safety add-ons and a bare minimum of performance upgrades allowed. The Toyo M3 has a full roll cage and fire system. The car is mostly stock with a full interior, Borla cat-back exhaust, stock brakes but with racing pads, and stock engine internals. All suspension bushings and bearings must remain standard BMW but the stock shocks were swapped out in favor of a set of H&R adjustable units. Will Turner is the president of Turner Motorsport Inc, a world-renowned BMW tuner and constructor of championship-winning racecars. Turner started his career with SCCA Club Racing in 1991 with a BMW 325is. From 1991 to 1997 he won several divisional ITS championships. In 1998 he entered the SCCA World Challenge series, missing rookie of the year honors by one point. Since then, Turner has recorded 3 wins, 18 top 5, and 42 top ten finishes. In 2003 and 2004 the Turner Motorsport team scored back-to-back driver's championships and manufacturer's championships for BMW. In 2005, Will Turner will also be driving a Turner Motorsport BMW 330i in the Grand Am Cup ST class. He is currently second in championship points. Turner Motorsport campaigns two BMW 330s in the ST class and an E46 M3 in the Grand Am Cup GS class. Will Turner, pilot Toyo Tires/Turner Motorsport BMW M3: "With this M3, Turner Motorsport is testing the competitive edge of a standard M3. This is what a lot of our customers are driving and racing an M3 will provide us with a better understanding of their cars. We're going to give customers and fans another reason why Turner Motorsport and Toyo Tires are the best out there for performance." Travis Roffler, Director of Marketing for Toyo Tires: "We have been very impressed with Turner Motorsport's ability to compete and win in the SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Series and we are looking to bring that same winning mentality to the T2 class of SCCA Club Racing. We look forward to utilizing this venue to highlight the race proven performance capability of the Proxes RA1. We believe Will Turner is an excellent choice to pilot the BMW M3 to a T2 Championship at the runoffs." The SCCA Runoffs is the week-long championship for all national classes of SCCA Club Racing. It will be held at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in September. The Runoffs(r) are televised by The SPEED Channel. Just another data point. I have a Stack system in the race car and set the warning light at 24 PSI. In tight corners when I need to downshift (i.e. oil sloshing and low revs), the light flickers slightly on some occasions and I usually see 21-24 as the pressure when it does. The light is always on while idling hot, but that's little concern for a track car, expecially when I can just hit the "Alarm" button and turn off the light. Shane K. '96 M3 '94 325i #76 ITS Yahoo! With the caveat that I've never actually sat in Vaders for an extended period myself, I've read that the sedan/lux seats are far more comfortable than the Vaders. Regardless, you can swap Vaders into a sedan, and there are buckets of them to be had on eBay/bimmerforums, so that's less of an issue. ------------------------- From a personal standpoint, I believe that the coupes look better, and there are WAY more of them to be had. But I love the utility of the four doors and would never give them up. I've seen many people selling coupes for sedans, but I see very very few people looking to lose two of their doors. #7. Pressure Plate troubles- again - from Jake Leverett
Top
Date: Thu, 19 May 2005 11:29:42 -0400 From: Jake Leverett <jake.leverett@gtri.gatech.edu> Subject: Pressure Plate troubles- again Group: I have installed a 98 E36 M3 engine and drive train in my 88 M3 about a year ago. Several month after making the conversion I started getting a vibration and the gears became increasingly difficult to engage. Finally it became almost impossible to change gear and the vibration increased dramatically. I removed the clutch only to find some of the rivets in the pressure plate had sheared. I took the pressure plate to a local clutch shop and they repaired the pressure plate by replacing the sheared rivets. Several days after getting the car all back together the same symptoms reappeared after a miss shift and hitting the rev limiter. This time when I removed the pressure plate one of the three riveted spring bands that hold the pressure plate assembly together had torn at the rivet holes. I then purchased a new pressure plate from the local dealer and all was well again. The car has sat for the last several months because of a suspected VANOS noise problem. Today I drove the car to work for the first time in a long time. Coming home this evening I pulled out into traffic into a small gap in traffic and hit the rev limiter hard in second gear. The next gear change told me something was wrong again. Sure enough the vibration and hard shifting had reappeared again. I have not disassembled the car yet but I suspect the same old problem of a damaged pressure plate will be the ultimate finding. The dealer told me the pressure plate was guaranteed for two(?, at least one year for sure) years when I purchased the new pressure plate. The pressure plate is still under warranty so getting a new pressure plate should not be a problem. However I do not want to be constantly pulling the transmission every time I hit the rev limiter. The car has a lightened flywheel, a spring loaded clutch disc since the lightened flywheel did away with the spring loaded dual mass flywheel, a 3.46:1 differential, and I have always high revving four cylinder engine,... so I find it very easy to hit the rev limiter while doing spirited driving. Is anyone else in the group experiencing these type of clutch related problems? If yes, what has been done to correct the problem? TIA, Jake

One thing I was also thinking - I have the budget to pick up a nice E34 540 or even M5 as a back-up sedan. I would still drive the M3 most of the time, but it would be a nice back-up car that I wouldn't put too much mileage on. If the Alusil update was done those seem to be very robust cars, much more so than the E39 540's (I had a '99 and had too many problems with it). That way I could keep the M3 just a bit nicer too since it wouldn't be called on for quite as much duty. It is something for me to consider - and also have a discussion with the wife, I already know she will not be in favor of the idea..... To that point, she won't be very happy about me selling the Z06 either.....
