Does anyone know if the Dinan S3 supercharger package is smog legal in CA? I am looking at a car out in IL with this and unsure if I will have issues with passing smog in CA. I guess it would need an EO# to be legal - anyone know? After significant brake fade last year on my ’98 m3 with stock and hawks HPS pads ( the HPS were better but still not enough) this year I put front cross drilled rotors (they were on sale ;-) and hawks HP+. I also kept street tires on and the combo was pretty good with almost no fade. This at Watkins Glen over 2 days with temps between 50-75 degrees. The last session in sunny and 75 degrees weather I put some of that brake paint that changes color with heat on the rotors and got a reading corresponding to 1100 degrees (ouch that’s hot). I was braking pretty hard, 9/10th, but remember with street tires and pretty good technique – hard on the pedal for shortest amount of time. It is also tough to say if I got to these temps just on a couple of occasions or consistently every time I hit the brakes on the back straight. So are these rotor temps ok or way too high? Stefano ’98 M3 with a new found respect for braking components. The fade was manageable if I backed off a little. This year I am running Hawk HT-10 pads and it is night and day difference. They stop much better than the HP+ pads and I experienced absolutely no fade at all at Road America or the Autobahn County Club. They didn't even dust that much after I had them bedded-in and up to temperature. -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

#5. timing chain? - from Scott McClung

Date: Tue, 24 May 2005 13:51:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Scott McClung <smlists@pacbell.net> Subject: timing chain? I was checking out an add on a '99 coupe for sale with 68K miles, and the owner listed that the 60K service was just done including timing chain replacement. OK, the motor does have a timing chain, not a belt - and you don't need to replace it as a service item to my knowledge, correct? Could the person be confused and maybe the serpentine belts were replaced? Or should I not bother even calling to ask..... Scott

However, it may be replaced as a "while we're in there" thing. But then you'd want to ask what they were doing "in there" in the first place. (FYI, BTDT on the race car.) > Could the person be confused and maybe the serpentine belts were replaced? That always a distinct possibility :-) > Or should I not bother even calling to ask..... Couldn't hurt... My 2 cents, Jim Bassett

#7. ASC Light - from John

Date: Tue, 24 May 2005 15:11:35 -0700 (PDT) From: John <m3john@yahoo.com> Subject: ASC Light Hi, I recently sent my car out for Inspection II a few months ago and now I notice that whenever I accelerate hard (above 65mph) on drive pavement, my ASC light flicker and the system engage. This is really annoying when I try to pass or enter the freeway. I try to do some research but nothing seem to tell me the correct answer. My car is a 98' M3 Coupe with 75% good tread on all four tires. Tire size are original - staggered. I read in the digest somewhere back while doing the research that this might be due to clogged Air Intake. Is this true? I have Jim C chip and Free Flow Air Intake. I have cleaned my Intake about 6 months ago. This is all in CA-Bay Area weather/road condition. Any help or suggestion is much appreciated. I don't know your particular application, but it might be a possibility. Or, you could email Jim and ask him his opinion. There is a slight difference in height from a 225/45 to a 245/40, so if they got a little confused when replacing your wheels I could see that happening. ;) Jonathan L.

#10. Dinan S3 supercharger pkg - CA smog legal? - from Lew Becker

Date: Tue, 24 May 2005 19:02:43 -0700 From: Lew Becker <lmb_cfls@sbcglobal.net> Subject: Dinan S3 supercharger pkg - CA smog legal? While I can't speak to Dinan's "Stages", my Dinan SC 97 M3 is CA smog legal. Dinan provided CARB EO stickers with their SC kit when I got mine; an IL car may not have the stickers. I seem to recall that staging up involved a Dinan cat back exhaust (which wouldn't make a difference as far as smog); and, that all the Dinan's road stuff is CA smog legal. You're probably best off calling Dinan to confirm.
