#3. Amsoil source - from Chester Wong

Date: Fri, 27 May 2005 10:03:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Amsoil source I was looking at this: http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8142 More specifically, post #3. What I noticed in my E36M3 is that when I first do an oil change, it's fine. No oil is burned. However, after about 2500 miles, I start to burn 1 qt/1000 miles or so. I've usually used Mobil 1 10W30 Synthetic, but I guess when they switched their formula to "Tri-synthetic" they weren't Group IV any longer. I drive the car pretty hard and do notice that the oil that comes out is very fluid...almost like water. Now, I've had bad experiences with Redline (Hi Jim!) so I don't think I would want to use their oil and reading around shows that Motul has issues and that the clear "winner" is Amsoil. So...where do I get this stuff? I think a list member (Mel?) is a dealer, but I'm unsure of other sources. I wonder where the Castrol stuff spec'ed for the E46M3 falls.... Of course, I would want to use the new oil in both the m3 and the Elise.... TIA, Chester

Since it is a new car and is undoubtedly under warranty, you want to only use oils recommended and approved by Lotus as to not void your warranty. I remember one of the biggest drawbacks of the Amsoil is that it does not carry the ACEA certification specified by BMW and other European car makers. While I bet the Amsoil would pass if tested, it is something to note. I just changed my M1 15w50 last night with Redline 10w40 as recommended by a few people. It was on sale for a little over $6/quart and thought it would be nice to try. And from the 10 miles I've driven my car since, it feels nice- the viscosity change certainly makes a difference. It's been run in 110F + weather (Willow Springs in the summer) and I've never burned any oil. I did try some 10w40 once and noticed that my mileage suffered and the car felt sluggish so I changed after 2000 miles back to 5w50. Haven't used anything else since. I put 5w30 (spec weight) in my 4Runner after 1800 miles. Yeah, the 15W50 really bogs down the engine. SOmeone mentioned that the 10W30 actually didn't meet the BMW spec, I'm not sure. So I've been using the Mobil One European one but it still burns...
