If you drive the car pretty hard I'd think that 10W-30 is a somewhat thin grade to choose, except for winter use. What kind of oil temps are you seeing after hard driving? > Now, I've had bad experiences with Redline (Hi Jim!) so I don't think I would > want to use their oil and reading around shows that Motul has issues and that > the clear "winner" is Amsoil. You might want to read this ongoing test report (there's rather a lot of it): <http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html> The problem they found with the Amsoil they used is that it thickened unusually over time, i.e. the lighter fractions seem to have evaporated prematurely compared with other oils tested. Depending on your oil change interval this may or may not matter in real life. I've been using Mobil 1 5W-30 in winter and 15W-50 summer/track and don't seem to consume enough oil to pay attention to. On the other hand my change intervals are typically rather short in terms of miles, so it might never become apparent. #6. Mobil 1 and Group-IV (PAO) - from Don Eilenberger
Top
Date: Fri, 27 May 2005 19:55:29 -0500 (CDT) From: Don Eilenberger <deilenberger@verizon.net> Subject: Mobil 1 and Group-IV (PAO) From their website: ............................................................ Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil? Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application. Back to top I've noticed that Mobil 1 has a lighter shade than usual. What is the reason for this change? Will it affect Mobil 1 performance? In the summer of 2004, we improved one of Mobil 1's additives, which resulted in a slight color change. Rest assured that this change in color will have no effect on Mobil 1's outstanding performance. All versions of a specific Mobil 1 product - prior to and following the color change - can be mixed without any effect on product quality or performance. ............................................................ One of those rumors that has been going around for at least 3 years I know of.. ........................................................... From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Amsoil source I was looking at this: http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8142 More specifically, post #3. What I noticed in my E36M3 is that when I first do an oil change, it's fine. No oil is burned. However, after about 2500 miles, I start to burn 1 qt/1000 miles or so. I've usually used Mobil 1 10W30 Synthetic, but I guess when they switched their formula to "Tri-synthetic" they weren't Group IV any longer. I drive the car pretty hard and do notice that the oil that comes out is very fluid...almost like water.
