Both of them were in my run group and both spun going over Madness. When the rain came, they both went straight back to the paddock... All in all, I wasn't overly impressed with them and would never buy one for $50k (an E46 M3 or a Z06 would be way more interesting to me). They are 100% impractical. I sat in my buddy's car, there is no way I would want to routinely put myself in and out of that car. Certainly my ten year old E36 M3 had no problem getting around either one at the track and I can fit the track tires in the rear seat and all my track crap in the trunk. The orange is hideous by the way, my buddy's is yellow which isn't bad. Later, Rich

Date: Thu, 02 Jun 2005 14:50:06 -0700 From: Jon Phillips <jphillips@futurenetworkusa.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Elise on the track I have an Elise. I've put 2,000 miles on it since getting it in Feb. About 150 miles were accumulated during one day at Thunderhill. It is a handful compared to my E36 M3. The M3 absorbs mistakes and undue driver input; the Elise amplifies mistakes and undue driver input. In a nutshell, the Elise requires much more smoothness. I spun at the apex of Turn One. It turns out I had a punctured right rear (the loaded tire on that turn). When I pitted, I discovered I had just 13psi in that tire, and air was escaping with an audible hiss! But aside from that anamoly, I got squirelly on two throttle-lift situations wherein the M3 simply would have rotated. I caught both oversteers before the car could pirouette, but without a doubt the Elise proved it doesn't suffer fools gladly. I'm sure that when I become a better, smoother driver, I'll get more out of the Elise. (My 10th track day of my short HPDE career will be this coming Monday). But for now I can say that I really have to pay attention and respect this car's behaivor relative to my M3 (staggered set-up, 97). I'll also say that the Elise has INCREDIBLE brakes. I brake much later in the Elise. It's also a total hoot to drive around with no top, and such incredible steering feel, and 1,100 pounds less. on 6/2/2005 2:36 PM GGray657@aol.com said the following: >Date: Thu, 2 Jun 2005 17:35:18 EDT >From: GGray657@aol.com >Subject: Elise on the track > >We had one at Barber last weekend he spun several times. I would say it did exceptionally well in an impact - the passenger compartment appears to be untouched. Don't be misled by the body damage. It's all composites and not structural. These folks think the Elise is the be-all and end-all of sports cars. They also think they are all awesome drivers and give out advice/information like an armchair tuner. They post videos of them "carving" the twisties...crossing the double yellow and all when the speed that they go is no where near the limit. Ugh. One guy posted a video of him driving through traffic to showcase his exhaust and how loud it is. He downshifted and you hear the engine bounce off the rev limiter...gee, you think he overrevved the engine? O well...I'll take it easy :) And Rich, the Orange is great! ;) Chester --- GGray657@aol.com wrote: > We had one at Barber last weekend he spun several times. I think it's more > driver than car. There's no doubt that there are many talented drivers on EliseTalk and like most car forums, there are a fair share of idiots (this list, bimmerforums, dtmpower, roadfly, etc included). > The Elise makes my M3 feels like a school bus on rubber baby-buggy- > bumper wheels. I agree. That's why I ended up buying a chrome orange one after I sold the nightfall blue one. Who knows...maybe taking the Elise to the track will make me a better driver in the M3. I just want to take it on the track a few times to feel it at or near the limit. Also...the rear swaybar tabs on my M3 are broken and I have yet to fix it. Hey..maybe it's the M3 trying to mimic the Elise ;) Yes...the torque of the S52 is nice....on the highway, just leave it in 5th. In the Elise...downshift to 4th maybe even 3rd depending on how fast you're going. > As for pure performance, a properly driven E36 M3 versus a properly > driven Elise is probably a wash on most tracks. It's about a steering feel and a chassis response that just > isn't available in any current production car. Stock vs. stock, the Elise can probably carry a significantly more amount of speed through a turn. Even 10mph is a lot where your exit speed will determine your speed at the end of the straight. As for acceleration, I don't think the E36M3 will trump the Elise. A Z06, Viper, 360, 993TT, 996TT, etc...yes...but not the M3. I did a running start drag race with a E46M3 with a 3.91 diff, LTW flywheel, chip, intake, etc....and it was neck and neck. ...if I hadn't bungled the 2 -> 3 shift, I think I would have had him....(hi Wayne!). Surprisingly, an early S2000 (the smaller engine one) managed to keep up, but he downshifted to 1st :-D (Hi Dave!) Just my $.02 Chester
