There were two at Mid-Ohio this last weekend in my run group, both spun in the same session pretty much in the same area, one before Madness one at the start of Madness. Both cars seemed to be quick in the dry although I was in an underpowered E36 325is so that's not saying much. Orange one was very slow in the rain, the yellow one just opted out of driving in the rain (sheesh). That Orange color is just offensive. ;-) One car was owned by a friend of a friend so I ragged on him about not driving it on the wet track, the rest of the wankers in my group were going slowly (and _not_ letting me by) so it's not like it was a dangerous situation or anything. I could been pedaling a bycicle faster than these guys were driving. :-) Carlos. :-P

OK, the torque rush is the automotive equivalent of crack, and it'll turn in amazingly well for a dreadnought, but... The brakes suck, it overheats if you push it for more than a few laps, the outward visibility is like looking through a mail slot and it offers about as much feel and feedback as an '80s video arcade NASCAR game. It was fun for a few laps, but then I wanted to get back into my M3. I've also instructed in a Z06, but my only stint behind the wheel was around a skid pad. I was very impressed. Can't say I want one (though I'd take one over a Viper in a NY minute), but I gotta admit that as a track tool, they're *serious*. - Alain

He spun right in front of me TWO times making me super nervous. In the rain, he just stayed in. Last year at Road Atlanta, there was an Elise that was all over the place (Run Group A student). I have to drive one at the track to get a good feel for it. BTW I drove the new Competition Packaged E46 M3 for a couple of laps at Barber. Felt comparable to our cars. Looks like I'll have to wait another month as I just heard back from the NCC chapter saying that my Elise is not allowed :( The Delval and GVC chapter, OTOH, are both cool and allow it. > BTW I drove the new Competition Packaged E46 M3 for a couple of laps at > Barber. Now I still have 2 toys but I am combining the SUV with the sedan. That doesn't work for me. I need my 2 toys plus a sedan. And btw - we still need the SUV and it makes no sense for her to drive that anymore due to gas costs. So the only way to resolve this is to go to 5 cars, right? Right? right?.... Somehow I don't think she is gonna see the logic there, but I'll give it a shot.... <edit> But theme 2 adds 1 car to the mix, something the wife has previously frowned upon. Scott

I used to instruct at a Viper fun day (mirror image autox courses) held for the development groups at Daimler-Chrysler (Vipers and Prowlers). I never had any issues with visibility but I didn't like how the pedals were offset in relation to a BMW. I was afraid I would mistake the gas pedal for the brake pedal but luckily the human body adapts quickly. The one year they came out with ABS was a night and day difference, you could actually push the car hard into a corner w/o worrying about locking up and ending up in the next parking lot. :-) Before that I would also agree the brakes were horrible. I've never had the opportunity to compare one to a Z06 but I had a student in a Lingenfelter C5 (twin turbo) and it had more torque than a Viper. I'd definitely choose a Vette over a Viper. You probably need a lot of gold chains to look right in the Viper though. ;-P Carlos.

The brakes were strong (again less fade compared to the standard E46 M3). Not to mention the robotic racer steering feel of the E46 M3 (reminds me of 3000GT ) was pretty much gone too. In a nut shell, it did everything my car did except it felt much faster. Hope I made it clear now :) Ahmad -----Original Message----- From: Chester Wong [mailto:chester_p_wong@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 10:19 AM To: Ahmad Lutfeali; E36M3 Subject: Re: [E36M3] RE: Spinning Elises --- Ahmad Lutfeali <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> wrote: > Last year at Road Atlanta, there was an Elise that was all over the > place (Run Group A student). > > I have to drive one at the track to get a good feel for it. #10. E36 M3 Convertable Advice? - from jjm1962@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 03 Jun 2005 10:37:44 -0400 From: jjm1962@aol.com Subject: E36 M3 Convertable Advice? Along the lines of how to maximize utility (personal economic utility- not SUV utility), I have a 740i (long distance family road trip car, and a 318i E36 convertible. My wife has a Volvo SUV. I also have a 528i but that is on the block for sale. Looking to redo the inventory and am considering an E36 M3 convertible to replace the 318i ( keeps the convertible benefit; adds M3 fun, and give me an automatic roof (wife's request) - the 318 i roof is manual yet trouble free). I figure if I can get the M3 convertible and sell the 528i, then that leave me a slot to fill for my 'gas saving ' commuter car: a Mini Cooper S. or maybe an STI. Anyway, any advice to someone just starting to look for an E36 M3 convertible (manual transmission is a must)? John M Horsham, PA
