The TIS states that the steering wheel needs to be removed before removal of the instrument cluster. Is this true, or can it be removed without removing the steering wheel? But it's worlds easier with it removed...plus you don't chance scuffing the leather on the wheel...so why take a chance. Two torx screws in the back to release the airbag and then a 5/8" bolt holding the steering wheel on (make sure to mark the column in order to put it back correctly)...

They are **MUCH** cheaper than $10k. You can find them on eBay or at your local salvage yard. It takes me about 10 hours to swap one in my garage by myself, faster if I can coerce somebody to help... They go by the brand name "ceramicool". They are very clean, work well for normal stops, and for 2 or 3 hard stops from ~70. Therafter, the pedal goes soft until the brakes cool. The list wisdom is that the pads are glazed, but I am now less convinced, since the pedal is soft even when the car is NOT MOVING until the brakes cool down. I may try bleeding the brakes one more time if I can find the time. If that does not work I will reinstall the oem Jurids and see what happens with those. Dave 98 m3/4

Literally took me 15 minutes for the entire job. No need to remove the wheel. Have the wheel centered, slide the cluster straight back and turn the wheel to the right with the cluster and it will come right out. No fiddling, or chance of scratching anything. The hardest part is disconnecting the wiring harnesses. Don't know if removing the wheel makes that any easier or not. FWIW, I have 255's on 8.5" wheels for the race car, on Kosei's (40mm offset?). Car is VERY low, but has Bilstein coil-overs in front that give me clearance in the strut direction (no spacers). I had to really roll the front fenders, though. One data point, Jim Bassett

Thanks Jim, so I'm assuming those were race tyres which normally run a tad bigger than streets so maybe I can get away with 255 falken 615. More meat and you can buy 5 for the price of a set of ps2 in 245. Hopefully we'll hear some more data points from the list and roll (bad pun) this out. That helps a little with fender clearance. The R1's on my wheels are very square but some other Rs aren't as square so they would be easier to fit. Then again, the actual size of a stated 255 tire can differ between manufacturers. I would offer to test fit the 255s on my car but what fits on one car may not work on another. -Bobby ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Bassett" > > On Fri, June 10, 2005 8:22 am, Patrick Goss - PA said: >> Has it been done, can anyone confirm? Go out to your car - do you have more than 1/2-inch from your 245's to the fender? As a ballpark estimation, that'll help as well. (Yes, I know not all "245" tires are 245mm across (same for 255), and there's wheel width & offset to consider. Hence "ballpark" :-)) > Hopefully we'll > hear some more data points from the list and roll (bad pun) this out. No, good pun! :-) Jim Bassett - can you tell it's only 3 more hours til I head to Buttonwillow?
