#1. re: AC fan troubles - from Justin Gerry

Date: Sun, 26 Jun 2005 22:55:34 -0400 From: "Justin Gerry" <justin_gerry@warpmail.net> Subject: re: AC fan troubles Replace the blower resistor, it is located above the gas pedal in the main console. It is a funny looking multi-pronged resistor. I believe the new one I bought is actually an updated version, which is supposedly less prone to failure. If the blower fan changes speeds, and it either runs on its lowest setting or highest setting, then the blower resistor is at fault. Sometimes the blower will work ok, and then start to fluctuate. Typically if the AC control unit is bad, the common symptom is the whole unit going dead. This is the bad capacitor (now documented) issue. You can rebuild cheaply yourself, pay someone to do it, or go to the dealer (updated code, and the auto function actually works now). -Justin '76 02 '97 m3 http://www.bmw2002.net

#9. Radiator replacement.. - from Don Eilenberger

Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2005 15:27:21 -0400 From: Don Eilenberger <deilenberger@yahoo.com> Subject: Radiator replacement.. Can be done with the fan still in place. Despite everything that everyone including all the manuals say - it's doable. My fan didn't want to come off. It was off 6 months ago, but it appears to have become really fond of the waterpump. Had the 32mm wrench. Wacked the bejesus outta it (yes - clockwise from the front..) and it wouldn't break free. Didn't have the pully holder tool (gotta make one of those), and didn't remember how easily the airbox comes out (which would have allowed me to use the semi-traditional jammed screwdriver/lock. --> Note to self: Get copper faced dead-shot hammer. <-- (Have to look in a brit sports car junkyard I guess..) Anyway - after struggling with the damn fan for about an hour, I finally took a real good look, and said fook-it, I'm goin'in. Turns out - you can easily hang the fan shroud off the top of the fan and top of the engine. Tie-wrap through the lifting eye keeps it there. Once it's hung up - it's just drain and wiggle the old one out, wiggle the new one in. Didn't even bend any fins on the way out or in. Rant// - I spent about 2 hours trying to get the two plastic curb-bumper-thingies that live at the ends of the bumpers back in place. The center panel was a piece of cake.. came out easy, went back easy, but - almost every Tinnerman screw-nut(1) on the fender liners had been ripped out at least one time, and most of them lots more than that so there was very little to left for them to grip. FINALLY - after getting an eyeful of dirt for about the 14th time (was wearing safety glasses, but my goggles fog up too badly to use on days when it's over 90 in the garage..) I gave up. Got out the electric drill, drilled matching holes in the bumper thingie and the fender liner. A few tie-wraps through each one holds it together MUCH tighter than the screws ever did. Cheap, easy to replace - gotta love tie-wraps. //end rant The old radiator, at 83,900 miles - looked PERFECT. No sign inside or out of any hint of cracking at the neck. The potential cracking was why I replaced it. It had a 1998 date sticker on it, so I'd have to guess it was original (and the service records don't have it ever being replaced..) One thing I noticed - the new Nissens doesn't have the ribs on the hose fittings. They are smooth except for a small partial rib right at the outer end to keep the hose clamp/hose from sliding off. If I had to guess - this change was made so the necks would be stronger. The Nissens was $139/delivered from EEuroparts LLC 800-467-9769 (1) = that's the official name for those things.. really. Oh - I had to do it Saturday since I got it on Friday for my birthday - from SWMBO and son.. figured I hadda show them how much I appreciated it. So - if you decide to do a radiator R&R and your fan isn't cooperating.. remember that it can be done without fan removal. _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________©1946________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ - http://www.njsbmwr.org/ '98 M3c/5, '03 525iT, '87 K75S
