#2. Headlight Question - SilverStar Bulbs - from Mo Karamat

Date: Fri, 08 Jul 2005 22:55:39 -0400 From: Mo Karamat <karamatm@optonline.net> Subject: Headlight Question - SilverStar Bulbs It's a euro only bulb (bummer) but it can be ordered very easily from Powerbulbs (whoopie!) in the UK. It is the Osram SilverStar (not the POS they sell here..) It really IS 50% brighter than a standard Osram bulb. Overall the HID still puts out more light, but the SilverStar looks like a very useable lower cost alternative for people who want more light but not the hassle/expense of an HID setup . Guys, I ordered the Osram SilverStar bulbs for my IX a some time back. (from Powerbulbs I think) While Don is correct that they are not equal to the HID's they do definately put out more light than the standard H1 bulbs. (I did the H1/H4 upgrade on that car before purchasing this bulb) I have been very happy with them.. Mo

I've tried Redline D4-ATF, MTL and MT90; Mobil1 ATF and RP Syncromax. My favorite is Mobil1 ATF with D4-ATF a close second. If I were running enduros or longer track sessions, I may find it beneficial to use one of the heavier oils from Redline. I have Royal Purple in there now, put it in about 20K miles ago to replace the Redline ATF that I used for the preceeding 20K. I love the way the tranny shifts with RP, it seems to me to be much smoother shifting than with the Redline. Maybe I'll try the Mobil 1 next. #8. Vanos Issue - from kwill69058@comcast.net

Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2005 15:29:00 +0000 From: kwill69058@comcast.net Subject: Vanos Issue Hi, I have a 95, M3 with about 130k miles on it and about two months ago my engine was making the marbles in the can sound. I took it to two different shops and they both said the vanos needed replacement so I had it done. Problem is now at about 2k miles later the same noise is coming back just like before. I called the shop that performed the work and the owner said bring it back in. I asked him if there are any adjustments needed but he said it is not adjustable. Has anyone had this problem and if so what is the culprit/resolution? TIA ~Keith

Have them replace the primary timing chain tensioner, it costs $80 and takes 5 minutes to replace. You could also replace it yourself, it's very easy. Search the archives you should find the writeup. #10. Thermostat failure - from Jamie Howton
Top
Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2005 19:40:08 -0500 From: Jamie Howton <jhowton@gmail.com> Subject: Thermostat failure I was at the track this weekend with NASA Midwest region at the Autobahn Country Club. At the end of my second session on Saturday, I overheated. I opened the hood to find a steamy mess, the overflow return hose (skinny hose at the top of the radiator) had blown off and had mutually self destructed along with the viscous fan blades. I removed the fan and replaced the hose with some Autozone bulk hose, filled her up and started the car. It overheated again within 5 minutes of idling. I called it a day at that point. This morning I returned with a thermostat body that I had previously gutted with a hacksaw (I overheated at Road America a couple of years ago and thought it was the thermostat then, it turned out to be the head gasket that time -- gutting the thermostat had no effect), installed it, filled up again and ran the rest of the day with no additional issues. The oil temps got to 235 degrees F today and the coolant moved between 1/2 (normal) and 5/8. This is on a thermostat that has operated for 10K miles and seen ~20 track days. I replaced every part of the cooling system when I was chasing what turned out to be the head gasket, so I am reasonably sure that everything else is OK. I have heard of E36 thermostats that fail initially, but is it common for them to fail so decisively at such a short service interval (albeit somewhat severe duty)? Should I replace it more frequently as sort of a track type preventative maintenance? Is there a better quality thermostat available? Do E36 race cars use the stock thermostat? Thanks for whatever information you might have. -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL
