I believe the alternative choices were a Zymol product and a Wurth product. Cheers, Jim Bassett

I happen to have the issue AND a PDF scan of the article. For some stupid reason, I haven't uploaded the scan to my web server <g>. I can do that this evening. As a data point, I had this problem and had my local mechanic perform the fix as outlined in the article. Problem solved. Cheers, Jim Bassett

I had the Depo lights previously. What a difference. I now have ZKW installed. There is no comparison on quality. The ZKW are only marginally more and I would tell anyone to skip the Depo and go directly to the ZKW. I don't know about the DJ lights but if you are thinking of an upgrade completely skip Depo lights as an option. I can give you a list of reasons why not to buy Depo. 1. Crappy. 2. Brittle Plastic (supposed to be fixed now). 3. Optics not as good as ZKW 4. Did I mention that Depo is crap. Okay, the Depo are better than stock at a nominal price but for the money the ZKW is just such a better option than the Depo. Anyway, I'd like to thank list member Jim Powell (Apexcone). He is the man when it comes to prices on lights and other BMW stuff. Kent

What's the fix to the 5th gear won't return to center in neutral position problem? More detailed, when you pull the lever out of 5th gear to neutral a normally working transmission now springs the lever to the center in the H-pattern. My car just kinda feels like a spoon in a bowl of noodles so hunting for 3rd gear becomes challenging. Normally when it springs to the center you know 3rd gear is straight up (or forward). In my car sometimes I've selected 5th again because there's no feel to where the shifter is in the gate. The odd thing is that if you select a different gear and then pop it back into neutral it springs back as it should. The problem is only in 5th gear. I heard there's a Roundel article and Mike Miller? addressed this. Anyone know which issue and if it's available in some sort of transferrable format? (pdf or something along those lines). Ditto with a catch. It is NLA, at least in the US. If your friendly local dealer still has any - grab one and let us know. As an alternative - you can use almost any semi-thick silicone grease. Dow Corning: http://www.serva.de/products/data/35120.01.shtml Thomas Chemical: http://www.thomassci.com/catalog/product/3664 Food industry: http://www.serva.de/products/data/35120.01.shtml Unfortunately - none of these come with the nice foam applicator/tube like Gummiphledge did. I'm unfortunately using a lot of Gummiphledge since I got a convertible (it does wonders for creaks and squeaks..) As a sidenote - if you want rubber parts to last MUCH longer, giving them a thin coating of a silicone grease protects them from most environmental factors that cause them to fail (like ozone for those on the west coast.. ethanol and acetone fumes for those of us living in NJ) If you use this on a bushing surface where it contacts metal - I'd suggest wiping as much of it off as possible before assembly. Silicone grease is almost impossible to completely remove - so a micron thick layer will remain, which still provides some level of protection. Do NOT get it on any surface you intend to paint.. the problem with getting it off will become very obvious (DAMHIK..) Also - do not use it as a general lubricating grease (metal to metal applications) - it is actually not a very good grease in those uses. Silicone grease does work well for preventing galling and corrosion of stainless into aluminum (I used a LOT of it when I had a sailboat that I kept on salt water.) A small smear of it on the threads of a stainless bolt going into aluminum is enough to allow that bolt to come out looking like brand new years after it was put in. Without it - the bolt couldn't be removed weeks after it was installed, and generally snapped due to corrosion if I tried to remove it a year or so later. Good stuff - can't figure out why it was discontinued.. > Graeme _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________©1946________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ - http://www.njsbmwr.org/ '98 M3c/5, '03 525iT, '87 K75S

Anyone >know which issue and if it's available in >some sort of transferrable format? (pdf or something along those lines). I may have it as a PDF somewhere.. if so I'll send it to you directly. What the "fix" is - you have to remove the transmission, then remove a snap ring covering a plastic cover that seals a bore containing a spring and a detent (which is in contact with the shift-rails). There is a replacement detent available from BMW that is slightly smaller in diameter - this fixes the problem, or what lots of people do - wrap some 400 grit sandpaper around your finger and use it to open the bore up a bit. Apparently it doesn't need much. I just looked - don't have it here. If you ping me after 6PM tonight I'll look at home. It looks like a 5-minute job with the trans out.. >Carlos. >98 M3 _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________©1946________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ - http://www.njsbmwr.org/ '98 M3c/5, '03 525iT, '87 K75S
