#1. Best toe settings for tri-use car? - from Scott Spangenberg

I will be heading to my first track school with my '95 M3 this weekend. I want to have the toe set before I go, just because I have heard miscellaneous discussion that the '95 M3 likes some rear toe-in to keep the back end behind you :-) I will use this car as a triple use car ... street/autox/track ... so what is a good compromise toe setting front and rear? I was told by a friend who owns a '96 that he uses the rear camber adjustment to keep the tires from destroying themselves on the street, i.e. full camber and therefore max toe-in for the track, and then minimum camber and less toe for the street (since they both change when you adjust the camber). I am guessing that I want zero toe at the front, or maybe just slight toe out to improve turn-in. My question for the rear is how much does the toe change over the full range of the camber adjustment for a car with stock suspension (Koni yellows, but otherwise stock)? If I set it for zero toe at mininum camber on the street, how much toe-in will I get at maximum camber? Is it enough? That was a lot of talk for a pretty simple question, wasn't it? Sorry :-) I hope I got my point explained! I have used a Milwaukee 1/2" impact at the track for the last couple of years. It's worth every penny as far as I am concerned. One of the best investments (my racing partner) ever made. With two batteries and a car charger we have never even come close to running out of power. Very nice tool :-) -Scott Spangenberg -95 Avus M3, Track and Summer car -98 Neon ACR, Autox and Winter car -88 Mustang, CP Autox car (2006, maybe!) -05 F150, Girlfriend's & parts go-getter __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I did look at them briefly on Saturday preparing for the strut job.. what I noticed was they tend to be LOT bigger than an air impact for the same torque rating. In the case of the struts - the electric ones would not have been much help due to their size. Mike, I have the 18V Snap-On, it is nice, fairly powerful, much better than their older models, but it is pricey. By the way, 130 ft lbs of torque is a lot for most cordless impacts. Here is a great deal on a 1/2" high power cordless Dewalt impact (free shipping): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001LQLE2/002-0493644-8064857 The tool crib has it for $295 and that is typically one of the cheapest places. This thing is the most powerful 1/2" cordless impact I have ever seen (more than the Snap-On, more than Milwaukee or Makita by far). I have a 12 volt electric I take to the track and power off my mini-compressor/jump starter. Works as well as my home air impact wrench (which admittedly is not top of the line but does for most of my needs). Only problem is when I have work done and the garage monkey doesn't use a torque stick. Can you say 5 foot breaker bar with all of my 300lbs on it? #7. RE: Oil sump baffle kits...was...Engine mounts - from chuckbrazeau@aol.com

Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 17:41:04 -0400 From: chuckbrazeau@aol.com Subject: RE: Oil sump baffle kits...was...Engine mounts Actually, i DID physically fabricate my own kit using my own hands, my own aluminum, and my own tools, and it cost me less than $100 (this cost was for the flow gates that you can purchase from any BMW dealership). I did not DESIGN my own kit nor have i ever claimed that, but I did NOT buy Turner's kit and trace their pieces of aluminum onto a peice of paper and return their kit for a refund to make identical pieces. I used my eyes to see how Turner's pieces were shaped, used construction paper to fit my own pieces into an oil pan that fit into the same spots as Turner's pieces, and used those templates that i made to cut the pieces out of aluminum sheet that i had laying around in my garage. The fact that my pieces look similar (NOT identical) are because THEY HAVE TO BE THAT SHAPE TO FIT IN THE PAN IN THOSE SPOTS!!! In my write up i give plenty of credit to Turner Motorsports, as well as having a link to their website on my links page. I have nothing against Turner Motorsports, but i'm not going to pay over $200 for something i can easily make myself at home. That's my freedom of choice as an American. If someone does not have the skill, the resources, or the desire to make their own, then by all means buy the Turner Motorsports kit or the VAC kit. What is NOT cool is you publicly trying to make me out to be some sort of rip-off artist because i decided to use my own resorces and skills to make the same aluminum pieces for zero dollars and document it on the web. Give me a break... it's two flat pieces of aluminum that fit in the palm of your hand... not a complex adjustable camber/caster plate with a spherical bearing (hi Jay! :-) The only way you would have any credibility for your argument is if i were mass producing and selling this to other people as a kit, which i have no time or desire to do. You copied someone else's. And you were blatant about it, going so far as it post it on the web. Turner built this kit via trial-and-error, risking blown engines in the process. You copied his results using photos from the web. Not cool. - Mark

#10. Fog light brackets - from Scott Spangenberg

Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2005 07:05:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Scott Spangenberg <cpmustang2001@yahoo.com> Subject: Fog light brackets At our local autocross event on Sunday, my driver's side fog light fell out :-/ Luckily it wasn't damaged. Both lights have been obviously loose since I bought the car. I haven't invested the time to find out why, but now is a good time :-) The plastic bracket on each side is broken in a different way so I need to replace both of them. What do these things cost? I am a little afraid to ask :-) Looking at the design, I would expect these to be a pretty commonly replaced item, so hopefully they aren't outrageous ... hopefully :-) -Scott Spangenberg -95 Avus M3, Track and Summer car -98 Neon ACR, Autox and Winter car -88 Mustang, CP Autox car (2006, maybe!) -05 F150, Girlfriend's & parts go-getter __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
