I like I-5 in OR/CA that way - they have rest stops about every 30-50 miles and there is always a sign that says "Next rest stop xx miles". So you can figure out if you wait another 45 min to pee, or stop now :-) And yeah - easy to forget to fuel the rig when it sucks gas so quickly, and if you do forget the range is pretty minimal getting 8-12mpg..... BTW - I get ~12mpg in the Armada towing at 65-70mph, about 1-2mpg better than the 1/2t burb - I think due to towing in OD vs. not mainly - I never trusted the 4LE60 in OD even tho GM now says it is OK to tow that way - those are some weak tranny's, I will not go back to a 1/2t GM product again. This was a gr8 setup. The short body was gr8 for turning radius and gas mileage was pretty good at 13-14 towing. I also ALWAYS used my weight distriubting hitch, NEVER GO WITHOUT it. Then I stepped up to a 26 Ft enclosed trailer, With the car and 1 set of wheels and ALL the wekend stuff (10 gal, air compressor, microwave, TV,.......) The whole trailer weight in at 8800# at a certified scale. I upgraded to a Chevy Avalanche 2500 with a 8.1 lter big block motor. Towing power was no problem, there is soooooooo much power adn torque there BUT gas mileage is down to 9 mpg towing at 75 mph. (always use your weight distributing hitch) If you go for enclosed trailers, no matter what size, you pretty much are going to need a 2500 series truck. I like Chevy trucks, they are truely tested for towing, they have the best transmissions for this kind of work. I have had friends with Dodges and Fords, and they have had tranny problems. If you wanta go cheap by using an open trailer, you can get by with a long wheel base Trailer Blazer or short wheel base Tahoe with the V8 enigne, even with a 4.8 liter V8, you can trailer a open trailer without problems. Some of the new Nissan Titans and Toyotas are nice too BUT there is no bargins there. M3 hitch reply - from Steve GrigoryTopDate: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 12:04:37 -0700 From: "Steve Grigory" <sgrigory@alchemedia.com> Subject: M3 hitch reply Tom, I have a 95 M3 and had the Da'Lan (I think that's how you spell it) installed right after I bought the car about 2 1/2 years ago. I did it primarily for attaching a bike rack. I had it installed and to be honest it was only about a month ago that I even bothered to take the spare tire out of the trunk and look at the "bike rack reinforcement" the shop installed. And I only did that for a buddy in Denver who is installing the same hitch for the same reason. So far, it's been great. If they had to do any modifications to the rear fascia, then it's all underneath since the external view is unchanged. I have a pic of the trunk reinforcement if you'd like to see it. I had been told by both Da'Lan and the shop that did the install that it was needed for bike racks since bike racks put a greater vertical load on the hitch than a trailer does and this would cause the hitch to basically tear the trunk apart over time. Ouch! I also plan to get a small trailer in the somewhat near future. Although I could get everything to fit inside the car, it's a complete pain and you'll eventually either pull some muscle or scar the interior and end up all pissed off at yourself. Plus it's just very handy to attach the trailer and take off for the track. Very nice. steve -------------------- 10 -------------------- Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 11:22:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Scott Spangenberg <cpmustang2001@yahoo.com> Subject: Trailer hitches? (always use your weight distributing hitch) That's actually pretty good mileage. I only get 10.5-11mpg towing my 8000 lb enclosed trailer with my Crew Cab Duramax. Agreed on the distributing hitch. I have one on my '99 M3 and on the '86 eta. Installation was quick and relatively easy on the M3, better if there is a second person since my arms just weren't long enough to hold the bolt heads inside the car while turning the nuts under the car. Probably took 90 minutes and required drilling a few holes in the spare tire area. Got mine from HMSmotorsport but I'm sure others carry them. Check out the new hmsmotorsport site if you haven't been there in a while. Thought I had the wrong site at first with all the NASCAR safety stuff from their specialty store on the opening page. Depends on what you mean by bargain... my Tundra is a V8 w/ TRD offroad & towing pkgs. It is a reliable, 17->20mpg, 6 passenger car that can haul 1500lbs of crap in the trunk with a nice (un-truck-like) ride. It has 68k miles and ZERO rattles, squeaks, or wiggles. I bought it used for $15k. That is fine bargain by my estimation. -- Walter

Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 17:29:34 -0400 From: Roy Kao <royckao@gmail.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Cheap Tow Vehicle Suggestions... I'm with you, I too have started looking for a vehicle suitable for towing my M3 as it's becoming the dedicated track car for DE events and maybe to become a prepared club racer. We started looking at a car for the wife (X3 3.0i) and a truck to tow (Toyota Tundra or NIssan Titan). As we did more research, we realized that it's better to rationalize the 2 requirements down to 1 vehicle. So, we've narrowed our choices down to to Toyota Land Cruiser or its Lexus brethren, the LX470. In '06 guises, they're rated for 6,500 lbs. and that should be okay since I am looking for an aluminum trailer, new or used. The one cool feature they share is a rear view camera when in reverse...should make lining up with the trailer easier. What's caught me by surprise is the price of the aluminum trailers, new or used...I was in for a sticker shock. But the search continues for the trailer and I have some time since we won't be getting the SUV until December or so. I'd never thought I get one of these full size SUVs as I hate driving around them, but I guess I've found a purpose for these monstrous vehicles by towing the M3. -- ____________________ Roy - '99 M3 Estoril Blue > > -------------------- 8 -------------------- > Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 11:01:22 -0700 (PDT) > From: Scott McClung <smlists@pacbell.net> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Cheap Tow Vehicle Suggestions... > > I also started towing with a mid-sized Dodge platform, in my case it was a '94 Durango with the 5.2L V8 and it was rated to tow 7400lbs. What a crock that rating was, I fried the trans the first time up and over the hill to Reno to HAN. I was towing a 1400lb trailer with a 3800lb car, 2 people and some gear, so all that was easily 1Klbs lower than the rated capacity. I had to leave the truck in Reno at the dealer for a trans rebuild and rent a car to drive home for a few days, then drive all the way back to get the truck and pick up my trailer. What a serious PITA that was. I sold it shortly there-after of course.... > > And moved on to a '94 Suburban K1500, rated to tow 6500lbs. That thing towed so much better it was amazing - I think the longer wheelbase and mostly the added weight and solid chassis of the suburban were the keys there. > > Somewhere along the way I sold the show / drag race car and started towing a '89 Camaro and eventually a '91 Corvette to track days, so the load lighted up by ~500lbs or so. > > Next tow vehicle was another K1500 Sub, this time a 2001. Much better at towing - especially the brakes, much better stopping distances than before and less likely to fade. And yes, I do have trailer brakes too. The burb was rated at 8000lbs I think > > Current tow vehicle is a Nissan Armada. That thing simply rocks as a tow rig, with a nice 5-speed trans with low 1st gear and 385lb-ft of V8 grunt, you hardly notice the trailer back there. Rated to tow ~9K lbs. I think it would tow an enclosed set-up well. Nice thing is this vehicle also gets duty as our family road trip rig, plus great for camping and ski trips, and is my current business vehicle for the 1-2 times a month I need to haul around 4 people all day. I have thought about getting a cheap 3/4t pick-up for towing and hauling duty, but every time I do the math it works out cheaper and better to do it all with one vehicle. Food for thought there, depending on your other vehicle needs. > > Scott > '02 330i > '04 Armada > '03 Mazda Protege5 (wife's car) > '91 Corvette road race car > '04 Z06 - FOR SALE, $39,900 - only 6K miles!!!
