(ie - Will I break any of the subframe > bolts?) You will need to rent the subframe bushing removal tool from http://www.koalamotorsport.com/ or somehow obtain the tool from somewhere else. You don't need a tool to install the new bushings. I used a scissor type transmission jack to support the subframe/rear suspension assembly while I was replacing the bushings. It's big and very heavy, there is no way to do this by hand unless you completely disassemble the rear suspension/differential, even then you are going to be bench pressing lots of weight with one hand while trying to insert bolts with the other. I didn't break any bolts, the front two are studs which come down from the frame, the rear ones are bolts. I removed the exhaust from the manifolds back, the driveshaft and then dropped the subframe as one piece. I haven't seen any urethane diff mounts. -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

#3. [E36M3] Surface rust on sway bar? - from Sinha, Vikas

I was under the car last night jostling the stupid plastic shroud pieces back into place, and I saw that my front sway bar had a 1"x2" patch of rust where the coating had flaked/scraped away. Is this a "they all do that" or is this a "replace that part now before you crash into a tree, numnut"? Thanks in advance for any help! (I tried to do due diligence on this, but Google had 14,700 hits for "rust 'sway bar'", and none of the first 150 were relevant.) Vik Sinha 97 M3/4 ** Scanned by AAM SMS DGANT64 **

#4. need a new alternator, what to get? - from Theodore Serbinski

I replaced mine at 98K miles because of voltage fluctuations and ticking noises and everything was back to normal. You need to find out which voltage regulator you have because there are a couple of different kinds, but it's a pretty easy fix and costs less than a new alternator. #6. JTD Brake Cooling Kit - from twisty M3

Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 13:50:33 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: JTD Brake Cooling Kit Anyone running or have experience with the JTD Brake Cooling Kit? It appears to come with the aluminum underpanel, which I already have, so I'm assuming the kit can be had for much less than the price listed on the site. This kit draws air from the front mesh grill and exits into the wheel well, not directly to the rotor backing. Sounds fine for my application, as the Cobalt SpecVRs are pretty good with heat, and I'd just like to increase cooling a bit during these hot summer months. Any input is appreciated, Jonathan L.

#7. bumper undertray replacement parts - from Barrett Nicholas

Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 14:02:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Barrett Nicholas <barrettn@swbell.net> Subject: <e36> bumper undertray replacement parts OK, let me first make this disclaimer - while my car is not an M3, but rather a 325i, Suzy gave me her special dispensation to be on the list when she started it up. I think in part due to the Bilsteins, H&Rs, KMACs, RD Sport sways, Brembo 320x28 rotors w/4 piston calipers, 17x8 Racing Dynamics rims, JimC cai, etc., etc. I've put on it, but still with a nice big 325i badge on the back. In short, it's not a poser - I know it's not an M3 and never will be. (although the vanity plate M3WANAB is available, I checked!) That being said, a few years back someone pulled out it front of me and when I had it fixed, I had the shop use a M3 bumper cover for the better airflow to the brakes. They didn't do it right though, none of the undertray was installed that should have been. I just recently took a retread of a semi through the lower grill, wiping out everything below the reinforcement. It was so bad I pulled over, unbolted the bumper cover, pulled the reinforcing bar out of it, and threw the rest in a dumpster (after taking some pictures of it for the insurance company so the could see it was completely trashed). Given how the last shop fixed it, I'm leaning towards having a shop paint the bumper cover and grill and doing the work myself. At least I'll know it's done right - I was child slave labor in my parent's body shop, so I'm not worried about my ability to do the work, but I do need to get everything done up right in respect to the estimate because the insurance isn't going to want to dicker with me over a supplement for some part missing from the original estimate. Plus this way I can go with a JTD undertray and pay for it with some of my $35/hour labor. What I don't know is interchangability between sedan and coupe parts (my sedan is a 2/95 production date) - when looking on realoem.com I'm forced to chose between a 2/95 M3 coupe, or a later model sedan, plus I'm not completely clear as to what parts the JTD undertray replaces. The diagrams for a 95 M3 don't include the undertray, it's only listed for the lightweight and GT. Anyone know the interchange & can help me out? TIA, Barrett

Many things have gone wrong with the car, based on outright lies from the seller. The latest, of course, seems to be that the motor seems to have had some bent valves which he just learned when the car died. Anyway, he's looking for an M3 motor, and I don't think he's too particular over the variety... M50, M52, S52, S54... whatever ya got. Jonathan L.

I don't think you need to replace it, I would just give it a spray with something like Rustoleum to stop the rust. Over time rust will weaken metal to the point of failure. cheers, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 2nd Place BSP - PA State Championship 2004
