#1. Center console "upgrade" - from estorilphil@adelphia.net
Top
Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2005 13:40:04 -0400 From: <estorilphil@adelphia.net> Subject: Center console "upgrade" Hey there, I've got a question about the center console (the collection of cup holders and ashtrays and coin holder adjacent to the e-brake). Well, it started by my discovery of a broken cup holder. That of which got me thinking... I don't RARELY (if at all) use the cup holders, so why not take this opportunity to install in its place, something useful for a change? So my question is this: what are my options? I'd like to keep the coin tray and one cupholder and see if I can replace both the ashtray and the 2nd cupholder, if possible. From realoem.com it looks like I can install a "tray" in place of one cupholder + coin tray? Is that right? Or does the optional "tray" simply replace the cupholder? I actually do use the coin tray so I'd hate to loose it. Also, is there anything more functional/useful that I can replace the ashtray with? I don't smoke and that ashtray isn't very useful in holding stuff... TIA... Phil '99 Estoril M3/2 '96 Suburban

Now "assuming" that the spherical end of the GC rear adjustable control arm becomes illegal in Prepared in the future, would the Rogue unit be a good choice (it has rubber inner bushing)? I finally got a hold of Dale at GC. One thing he suggested is to go with the Hybrid camber plates instead of the Race plates. Anyone has experience with the Hybrids? I've heard good things about their Race plates in the past. For RTAB, am I better off with Powerflex or a 97+ factory bushing with GC shims? Thank you so much for all your input! Alan

I just figured it doesn't hurt to get another perspective from the supplier. WHEN I did get a hold of Dale he seems to be a very nice guy. >On Tue, August 9, 2005 9:48 am, Carlos.F.Lopez@jci.com said: > > If I were to buy new GC stuff I'd go through James. > >Or any of the other distributors of GC components. Reminds me of interpreting the USPSA rulebook ;-> We'll see if it gets written in the 06 book. Alan > >Correct. And actually, IMNSHO, the CR Rules are fairly simple and easy to >follow. They outline what you CAN do at a particualr preparation level >(Stock, Prepared, Modified); if it's not listed, you CAN'T do it. >

Once all 4 of those are out, you can get the whole holder assembly out. The bottom of that has a few cross supports, enough that when you cut up a mouse pad and put it in there, the mouse pad will make a good floor for the tray. Presto, cell phone / miscelaneous junk storage area. Best part - it's free. Okay I have the part in hand (Expansion tank 16-13-1-183-056), the next question is where does this go? The Bentley makes it look like it goes in the passenger side rear wheelwell, but I can't seem to find it. Any ideas? There's a tray (I think it's a cassette-tape holder) that fits in the same space as the ashtray. That's what I have, since too do not smoke. From RealOEM.com for my '98 M3: 19 STORING PARTITION 51164211331 ENDED Ended? Bummer. I can double-check the part number when I get home - I think I have it somewhere. Jim Bassett

I left the ashtray in (sans inner tray, it holds a second-gen iPod perfectly) and I left one cupholder for the occasional Pabst Blue Ribbon. But the remaining space is still plenty large enough for cell phones etc. Andrej, I think I got my original inspiration from an old post of yours, so all credit to you! :) Vik 97 M3/4 > From: Andrej Dolenc <adolenc@erols.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Center console "upgrade" > Here's what I did to my center console ages ago: > Removed both cup holders, ashtray (there's a > wire for the ashtray light), and the coin holder. > Once all 4 of those are out, you can get the > whole holder assembly out. Even with the GC shims, the stock bushing will eventually wear out (quickly!) in race/track conditions (ask PeterG :-)). My 2 (more) cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - new stock RTABs, removed GC shims after 2 weeks (noise/vibration) 1993 325is #44 JP - Powerflex RTABs
