#3. Coilover Upgrade - MORE Input Needed!!! - from Mo Karamat

Date: Tue, 09 Aug 2005 19:20:26 -0400 From: Mo Karamat <karamatm@optonline.net> Subject: Coilover Upgrade - MORE Input Needed!!! Alan, Hello.. I have their "hybrid" camber plates on my e36. All this means is that they send you a large rubber pad that sits between the top of the spring, and the upper pearch. It isolates some of the harshnesss. While I give the plates high marks on ease of adjustability, they have a nice scale etched on the tops of the plates which makes setting both sides evenly easy, the one problem that I have had is the clunking from the bearing. I have already sent the slider back, and after a week or so, the clunking returns.. A friend suggested the motorforce engineering makes a similar plate, but with a larger bearing.. I do not know anyone who has purchased/had any experience with the motorforce plates.. Also, while Dale is hard to get a hold of, I have always found him exceptionally helpful, knowledgeable, and pleasant to work with. Good luck! I finally got a hold of Dale at GC. One thing he suggested is to go with the Hybrid camber plates instead of the Race plates. Anyone has experience with the Hybrids? I've heard good things about their Race plates in the past.

#9. Re: Compressor Recommendation - from Matthew Finlay

Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2005 23:00:04 -0500 From: Matthew Finlay <matthew.finlay@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Compressor Recommendation Hi Hans. Mine is 6 peak hp and 2 hp working. I tend not to use it long enough that I need to keep working with it running. I start it up before I'm ready to head out and use it, and then I'm set for my entire job. It's tough to give a minimum recommended working hp...it really just depends on the size of the tank and your tolerance for eardrum pain. For my needs, the 2hp working is fine. Is the model you were looking at 2hp peak and 2hp running? Or is it 2hp peak, <1 hp running? I hope I didn't mislead you - I was playing with a hypothetical in my last email. I've never actually seen a high hp, small tank compressor. I just think it is conceivably possible to make one. Perhaps the higher hp motors require more substantial framing than the small tanks tend to provide, so manufacturers haven't found a way to design a good one yet at a reasonable price point. I'm guessing about that, but it seems like a good thought. I spent a lot of time in Home Depot today and remembered this thread, so I checked out the available impact wrenches. There are some ~400 ft-lb impact wrenches available for about $100. The ~600 ft-lb one I found in the Harbor Freight catalogue (that coincidentally just showed up in my mailbox) was about $150-$200. I heard last week that suspension work requires something in about the 400 ft-lb range, so you might consider getting one of those. Keep in mind the potential power draw if you do buy a compressor. I had to hire an electrician for an additional $150 on top of the price of the compressor before I could use it. I'll never hire an electrician for such a simple job again, but still, you'll want to keep that in the back of your mind as you decide what to do. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck with it. msf -------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2005 11:30:21 -0400 From: "Hans Batra" <hansbatra@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Re: Compressor recommendations? Hi Matt, Thanks for the comments and recommendations. The model that you have - does the 6 hp represent "peak" or "working" hp? Is there a particular "working" hp number I should consider as a minimum? I love the idea of a small tank/high hp compressor. Who makes those and are there any models that you recommend - say under $500? Thanks, Hans

I had to > hire an electrician for an additional $150 on top of the price of the > compressor before I could use it. Oh you got out lucky. I had no 220 in the garage, and my house panel is maxed out. I had to install a new dual service where the power entered the house. Of course, the Power Company had to run new wires to the house as my old service was only 120 amps and the new one was 200 amps. That cost me $475. Then I had to hand dig a trench that was 80 feet long and 18" inches deep and bury a cable that supplied my new breaker panel in the garage. After I installed the new panel, I had to install conduit to the compressor. Of course I now have oodles of electrical power in the garage, and it allowed me to get a new MIG welder. But I am about $1200 poorer as a result of the power upgrades alone. Matthew (AK) 98 M3
