My dealer convinced BMW NA to order my car with the non-smoker package (*no* cupholders!) which meant I had to add the missing ashtray light and wiring. For reference, here is what I ordered: 65 14 9 433 034 cassette box 64 11 1 366 170 lamp socket 07 50 9 063 579 bulb I took power for the lamp from the mobile phone pre-wiring. -John '96 318is

The speculation part is you posting the rule clarification may not become written into the rules in 2006. That's obvious, per the rules. But, instead of placing doubt in the minds of those contemplating choices for their Prepared cars. Those who may not know their way around CR yet. Why not suggest that they verify that the clarification will be written into the rules. Or, if you have interest, do it yourself. Because I have an interest, that's what I did yesterday. I got confirmation from Nanci Maloney that "The clarifications from 2005 will be incorporated into the 2006 rules.". So, rock on Ground Control! I love the LCAs and my car will be legal in Prepared in 2006 and beyond. But, doable. I verified that the 05 rules clarifications will be written into the 06 rules. > > Is changing the bushing bracket (eg Treehouse front control arm > bushing/bracket) legal in Prepared? #5. Driver Training - from Ahmad Lutfeali

Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 10:22:19 -0400 From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Subject: Driver Training Folks, I have been having a bit of a hard time dealing/controlling/inducing oversteers. Since I have been doing a lot of trailing throttles or lifting to rotate the car (most of the over steers), at one point in time the rear was gradually breaking loose at Turn 3 Road Atlanta. My natural instinct turned to "LIFT". UGHHHHH! I controlled it back but was extremely disappointed on where my 'mental programming' went wrong. Similarly in the rain I had been running less grippier street tires to slide (and hence learn and get my comfort levels up) and during throttle induced oversteers (applied more gas than necessary while exiting) I once lifted all the way and did a very embarrassing 360. I hate to say this and you may roll your eyes reading this, but I had been playing the GT 4 with the Logitech Wheel on the PS2 a lot (simulator) and lap after lap I may have just screwed up the mental programming I once had (in real life). I am planning on locating and then renting (or obtaining permission to run on) a large space or a parking lot. Prefer to do this on a rainy day but may also end up renting a water tanker to make sure there is plenty of water on the surface. Build up a mid sized circle (skid pad with cones) and practice until I feel comfortable with the skid pads (few laps with mild over steers, few laps with understeers etc.). Apparently Ross Bentley suggests this exercise as well. I live in Atlanta and wanted to know if other fellow racers would like to play/learn from this as well. Am open to other suggestions as well. I'm a track guy and will take a road course over and autox any day of the week, but I'll also happily admit that NOTHING will do more for your car control abilities. My 3 cents, Jonathan L.

Allow me to suggest in addition to your circular skidpad, you modify it at some point to an oval shape.  The local BMWCCA chapter uses an oval skidpad in their Car Control Clinics.  It may make things a little more interesting/technical than the circular 'pad.  Tons of fun getting around an oval without changing steering wheel angle! I think that you could also set up your own private Auto-X exercises -- chicanes, slaloms, decreasing & increasing radius turns, etc.  Get the fun experience of varied exercises with 50x the driving time of a typical Auto-X. That would be a dream day.  I hope you can do it! Anyone in the SF Bay area interested in something similar? -zs ----- Original Message ---- From: twisty M3 <twistym3@hotmail.com> To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Wed Aug 10 08:58:45 2005 Subject: RE: [E36M3] Driver Training Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 08:57:42 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Driver Training A huge, wet skidpad can be a lot of fun, but if you have a chance to do an autocross or two in your area, I think that would provide MUCH more of a learning experience.  I'm a track guy and will take a road course over and autox any day of the week, but I'll also happily admit that NOTHING will do more for your car control abilities. #9. Head Gaskets 'n Stuff - from twisty M3

Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 09:30:53 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: Head Gaskets 'n Stuff Son of....! After years of believing I had a bulletproof motor and that I'd go along forever without ever needing more than routine maintenance, I seem to have run across a head gasket failure... White steam out of the exhaust, misfires, CE light, low coolant warning and sudden over heating. I believe I pulled over quickly enough, but don't know the extent of the damage yet. Anyway, I'm in huge fear of what this bill will come to, but when the head comes off, are there other things that should be taken care of at the same time? I don't want to spend more than I have to, but I also don't want to open the head again any time soon. If it's necessary to drop the oil pan (I honestly don't know if it is or not for something like this), then I'll get oil pan baffles welded in and the oil pump nut secured. Anything else to consider. Wickedly depressed, Jonathan L. (not that I can complain too much... car is a '99 with 150K miles, with probably 20-30K spent at high rpms on track)

Has anyone used it? Since I'll be going with 500# front I want to make sure the springs are doing the work, not the chassis. My first choice would have been the LTW Motorsport one that lets you adjust preload but at ~$500 that's a little rich for me. Alan
