But even that might not be *necessary*. > If it's necessary to drop the oil pan > (I > honestly don't know if it is or not for something like this) Shouldn't be, unless something really wierd happened and there's piston/block issues (doubtful). > Anything else to consider. Funny you should mention that. This was a big part of why I was extra excited about this weekend at Fontana and the following weekend at THill. This was just done two weeks ago. I was actually just about to do a nice write up on them for everyone to check out and give me any questions. Dyno numbers 'n all. :( I don't think the cams had any direct effect on this, aside from maybe speeding up what was possibly going to happen anyway within the next few thousand miles. As much as it SERIOUSLY pains me, better now than at 140+ on the banking at CalSpeedway. Zoinks! Jonathan

I was wondering, based on what you said earlier. Dammit! > I don't think the cams had any direct effect on this, My best guess is mere coincidence - HATE THAT! Budgetary/scheduling issues aside, it should be a time-consuming job for the head gasket (assuming no head/mill work). You can still have it ready for THill. (for a friend) A good friend is about to buy a Mazda6 wagon (new baby on the way). It is a 2004 and has 7k miles. Supposedly it was a demo for the owner of the dealership (it's at the Mazda dealer). I don't even know if it would have been officially titled yet, but if anybody has a CarFax report to lend, I would really apprecaiate it. The deal is REALLY good, and I want to make sure there's no skeletons in the closet! You are supposed to loosen the parking brake cables in the cabin completely. Then tighten the in brake drum adjuster until you feel drag on the wheel, then back it off slightly until you don't feel any drag. Then lift the handle 4 clicks and adjust the cables inside the cabin until you feel some slight drag on the wheel. This all needs to be done with the rear wheels in the air. Just did it last week with new brake disks. -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

#10. Driver Training - from Mo Karamat

You will be surprised how quickly you will learn about car control in an auto-x. The nice thing is that generally the speeds that you are going, not much can happen (unless you are REALLY unlucky!) Have fun! Mo -------------------- 5 -------------------- Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 10:22:19 -0400 From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Subject: Folks, I have been having a bit of a hard time dealing/controlling/inducing oversteers. Since I have been doing a lot of trailing throttles or lifting to rotate the car (most of the over steers), at one point in time the rear was gradually breaking loose at Turn 3 Road Atlanta. My natural instinct turned to "LIFT". UGHHHHH! I controlled it back but was extremely disappointed on where my 'mental programming' went wrong. Similarly in the rain I had been running less grippier street tires to slide (and hence learn and get my comfort levels up) and during throttle induced oversteers (applied more gas than necessary while exiting) I once lifted all the way and did a very embarrassing 360. I hate to say this and you may roll your eyes reading this, but I had been playing the GT 4 with the Logitech Wheel on the PS2 a lot (simulator) and lap after lap I may have just screwed up the mental programming I once had (in real life). I am planning on locating and then renting (or obtaining permission to run on) a large space or a parking lot. Prefer to do this on a rainy day but may also end up renting a water tanker to make sure there is plenty of water on the surface. Build up a mid sized circle (skid pad with cones) and practice until I feel comfortable with the skid pads (few laps with mild over steers, few laps with understeers etc.). Apparently Ross Bentley suggests this exercise as well. I live in Atlanta and wanted to know if other fellow racers would like to play/learn from this as well. Am open to other suggestions as well.
