I'd recommend loctite there and also on the 3rd upper bolt especially if reusing the nut. I've seen one racer (on this list) with his wheel flopping around because one of these bolts let go. He didn't use loctite. -Carlos.

Actually, it's much closer to 35-40lb. Easy for one person to lift, unless you're lying on your back. Shane K. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Date: Fri, 12 Aug 2005 10:50:44 -0400 From: "Edward N Frank" <enf@iglou.com> Subject: Random Warnings I have been getting random check control warnings conerning either brake lights or Lisence Plate lights. This seems to happen more often in the summer months than the winter (which is strange). All lights are good and usually turning the car off and restarting clears it. Usually, recently the plate light warning comes up a lot. Anyone eperienced this? Ed Frank 97 M3/4 83K

Agreed, Red Locktite on those bolts for sure. And properly torqued. The key on a track/race car is taking care of the easy or obvious stuff, because stuff is going to fail no matter what you do, but if you've taken care of the "easy" stuff, those failures (hopefully) will be few and far between. IMO. Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 - mostly big failures <sob>

After talking to Dale at GC and James at BW, I chose 500/600 as that seems to be the tolerance limit on the street. Minnesota roads are pretty chewed up by the winter so I want "some" compliance instead of leaping from bump to bump. I'll no doubt sacrifice some on the track but that's just the nature of a track/street car. Also, with Koni SA they don't seem to be able to control much stiffer springs effectively. Others will disagree here, but I guess this is at least a good starting spring rate for me to see if I want anything stiffer later on. It's probably easier for me to sell a pair of 600s if I want to go stiffer intead of trying to unload a pair of 700s if they turn out to be too much. >2) Are you also planning on replacing the front lower control arm >bushings? How about the arms themselves and the tie-rods? > Great questions. Both my front control arm bushings were replaces with stock ones not too long ago so I'll keep them for now. I can inspect the conditions of my arms and tie-rods more closely once I get into the suspension work. I don't believe they need to come off when swapping the front struts so if they are ok I prefer to leave them in. Or if my tie rods turn out to be frozen then I'll be forced to change them. Depending on the mileage of your car and how much your track it, changing the arms is always a good idea with the infamous ball joint failure. I figured I've spent enough in one day though ;-| >My biggest problem is deciding whether to go to solid bushings >(metal). I have a very high tolerance for NVH and am willing to >sacrifice comfort. As long as they are streetable (read: don't >require too much attention for minimal street use), I'd be very >interested in trying them. > My top reason for not going to solid bushings is that I want to stay within Prepared rules "in case" I want to do it later on. Once you go solid bushings you'll be in Modified which I'm sure I won't be able to afford or be competitive. But if CR is not on your horizon of course you can go as stiff as you're willing to tolerate. But as Jamie pointed out before, once you go solid you want to change everything to solid fairly quickly as they will put extra stress on other rubber bushings causing accelerated failure. I hope this helps. It may be 2 or 3 weeks before Matthew and I get to put everything on the car. I'll let the list know of my impression on the suspension. Alan 95 M3 - rolling on 10 yr old shocks
