#9. Power Steering Hose Failure - from Raza Uddin
Top
Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2005 22:48:55 -0700 From: Raza Uddin <raza.uddin@gmail.com> Subject: Power Steering Hose Failure As I left the last autocross of the season today, I noticed a rather large puddle of power steering fluid underneath the car. The only thing that is really bothering me is the life of this particular hose set: all the hoses, rings, clamps, and pipe were replaced under CPO 2.5 years and 30K miles ago. Given the car does see marginally more extreme usage than normal car, are the hose life expectancy really this short? From what I could see, it seems like it is only one hose and the leak is from where the rubber meets the metal fitting. I've looked in my Bentley manual, but it doesn't seem to distinguish between the hoses. Is there a easy way to differentiate the hoses? Also, are there any ways the "beef-up" the fittings? I looks like there wasn't much slack on the hose and is probably the cause of the separation between the rubber and the crimped metal fitting. Parts seem relatively cheap (thanks to Chester and Neil for the really comprehensive archive information), so what should I expect to pay in labor? Or is the job relatively straight forward that I would save a significant amount of money doing it myself. Thanks in advance! Drive Safely, Raza

The JTD oil distribution block is a nice piece for those who adding gauges, and that's an attractive sale price for it too. Related For Sale ================ There was a recent thread about the JTD brake cooling kit - I was one of the original customers of the underpanel/brake kit, which you can see here: http://store.yahoo.com/jtdesigns/e3brakcoolki.html I'm no longer using the air scoops which mount inside the bumper (rightmost thumbnail in link above), so someone please make me an offer that's worth my while to find, pack and ship them. Note this is for those nicely made aluminum scoops only, not the hose and not the flanges. You'll need to provide your own 5mm fasteners (hardware store). (I also have the underpanel available, but our nasty Midwest winters have corroded the threaded inserts to the point where I can't disassemble it, so doubt it's worth packing and shipping. If you really want it anyway we can discuss.) Best offer by 6 pm CDT Tuesday takes 'em. Help me clean out my garage!
