The answer for Bruce is that yes it will, and probably more easily than it did for me or will for Marco. The Euro filter housing has two sensor ports on the back. When using it on the US engine (Marco and I) you rethread one of those to M14x1.5 for the VANOS oil pressure line leaving the other one (M12x1.5 IIRC) available for sensors. I put the VANOS line on the port nearest the engine block and a JTD oil distribution block on the other. I'm using the JTD block to carry the stock oil pressure warning light, a VDO electric oil pressure sensor and a VDO oil temp sensor. The only orientation that worked was with the stock sensor straight up, the VDO temp sender going forward into a recess in the housing, and the bulky VDO pressure sensor pointing roughly 45 degrees down and toward the driver side. Its housing actually just touches the plastic shroud on the back of the alternator. For Bruce it should be easier, depending on which and how many sensors he's planning to mount, because he has the use of both original rear ports (the Euro engine has no external VANOS oil line). In fact by putting the oil temp sensor in one port and a VDO combined pressure sensor/warning light unit with M12x1.5 thread in the other there may be no need for an oil distribution block at all. Note also that the Euro alternator has a different cooling shroud, so any clearance issues with the VDO pressure sender might well be different anyhow. The sound reasonable to me, but possibly a pretty big variation from front to rear, as it seems many of the TCK and GC users run close-to equal rates front to rear. 500# all around seems to be the number I see most, but any and all feedback would be appreciated. Of course, it's all out of curiosity for now, as I pretty much just bought my car again with all the work that was just done. :( Jonathan L. - The owner of a brand-new, used E36 M3 that he's had for since it was new. ;)

I need to mount and oil pressure (VDO) and oil temp (non VDO, non M12 size). The question (and I am probably getting way off in left field as this is on a Euro motor, not a US motor) is does the ECU need to see oil pressure and temp? Oil temp I think it probably has to see, oil pressure? Is that just for the idiot light? I am not using a stock cluster so if there is not stock idiot light to light does it need to be there? If not then I need to mount my 2 oil pressure and temp gauges and leave the stock oil temp sensor. If I need to keep the stock oil pressure sender then I need to attach 3 things to one port or 2 things to each port. I am hoping the JT Design distrib block will allow me to put 3 in 1. I will need fabricate another mount for the odd temp sensor I have. Thanks, Bruce

Neil, I assume the oil pressure sender is that large, heavy thing. If so, I would NOT mount that directly to any housing or distribution block. It may take a while but I would bet that over time it will fail leaving you with no oil in short time. This is much more of a problem on buzzy S14's but personally, I would not take the chance. Get some braided line and remote mount that sender to a fender or some other stable area. You don't want anything shaking that thing, the block or sender will fail! You can ask Bob Stommel about that one. Hey Jack, Yeah, that "surely it doesn't need to be this big" thing. The stock pressure sender on the Euro engine is a fraction of that size, but I don't have any reason to believe it'd be compatible with my aftermarket VDO gauge. > If so, I would NOT mount that directly to any housing or distribution block. > It may take a while but I would bet that over time it will fail leaving you > with no oil in short time. This is much more of a problem on buzzy S14's but > personally, I would not take the chance. On the high vibration S14 I wouldn't doubt it, but direct-mounting the oil pressure sender to the engine via a distribution block is common practice on the S50/52. I can't be sure it won't fail, but since mine has been on the car for over 6 years I can at least be sure it won't fail prematurely. > Get some braided line and remote mount that sender to a fender or some other > stable area. You don't want anything shaking that thing, the block or sender > will fail! I've only seen one oil pressure gauge system failure on an E36, and ironically it was a fitting on the braided line to a remote mount (Putnam last year). I'd be curious to know if any Digesters have come across failures of hard mounted VDO pressure senders? I guess after seeing it once I just am always very wary of that type set up. I believe the one on my CM car is remote mounted but I'd have to check. These euro motors are still pretty greek to me. Ha ha. Part of my comments are from an engineering standpoint as well. I do a lot of vibration testing and even on a much smoother operating motor such as the S50 variants I would be concerned over time. I'm sure the 6 years you've had yours are a good testament to this mounting scheme, just as I'm sure in an S14 it probably wouldn't last one season. ; ) Just some food for thought. Cheers! OTOH my anecdote about the remote mount failure wasn't meant entirely frivolously. That more complex assembly itself introduces multiple new potential points of failure, and as we see it can happen. > Just some food for thought. And appreciated. It happened again, this time to Jeff Hermann at Mid-Ohio but he got lucky and it failed when he touched it as the car sat on the paddock. If it would've failed on the track it would've been just like Stommel's, bye bye bearings. This was an S14. I remote mounted mine on my E30 and I also did it on a friend's race car. So far so good, he raced at Mid-Ohio and no failures. :-P Yeah I'd say this is a 6 cyl. vs 4 cyl. thing, on my 98 M3 I probably won't remote mount it and it's not going to be a race car. -Carlos. Oil temp I think it probably has to see, oil pressure? I'm pretty sure that the answer to that is neither. BMWs of the E36 vintage only use the coolant temp sensor to monitor engine operating temperature; the oil temp and pressure sensors are for gauge and warning light inputs. You could confirm/disprove that by checking the Euro M3 wiring diagram to see if either oil sensor output leads to the ECU. > Is that just for the idiot light? Yes the JTD block has 3 output ports. It comes in two versions depending on what port sizes you need for your senders, see: <http://store.yahoo.com/jtdesigns/oildisbloc.html> <http://store.yahoo.com/jtdesigns/oildisblocjt.html> Each also comes with a port plug as shown in case you only need to use one output. It's a nicely made piece and has worked well for me. Neil Fort Wayne, IN 96 M3 - Bastard child 03 525iT - Sterling Grey Metallic 77 MGB - Original owner, need to sell 05 Mini - Cooper S with LSD!
