Phil, I took my car to Bullet in Costa Mesa for a couple of things, and they had their usual glass guy do it while it was there. Used the German glass. Cost was $450.00 or so. Overnight this developed into a 10" long crack. Doh! So I'm thinking I'll probably take this opportunity to replace the windshield along with the pits and chips and stuff. Now, can anyone recommend good installers in my area? I work in Irvine so close by to this vicinity would be good. And what would I expect to pay as well as watch out for? TIA... The tires are 225-45R17 Dunlop Winter Sport M2s with a good amount of tread left. The wheels are crappy quality M Contour knockoffs which have some discolored spots on them due to the extreme use of PB Blaster to remove some greasemonkey-torqued lug bolts. The wheels aren't in great condition, and about the only nice thing I can say about them is they're mostly round. However, as far as wheels you won't care about in the winter go, these would be perfect! Pictures available at: http://www.chrispitude.net/index.php?album=misc%2Fwheels&dispsize=1024&start=0 I am located in northeastern PA, zip code 18353. Free to whoever comes to take them away, or for the cost of shipping (I have no idea what they'd cost to ship, but my guess is more than they're worth.) - Chris

Because the contact patch >changes location with lean angle? That's part of it, plus I have heard they have to use more mold release to get the moto tires - which have a round profile to pop out of the mold (might just be rumor - but was told to me by someone from Metzler - who makes about the best moto tires IMHO..) The critical thing is any loss of traction on a motorcycle can be rather serious - leads one to starting a drift, which is OK until the tire hooks back up again. The not uncommon result is a "highside" where the bike snaps back the other direction due to the inertia of moving sideways suddenly being resisted by the tire hooking back up. That said - new moto tires - although VERY expensive (about the same as the M3 tires) and with short lives (if I'm lucky I get 8,000 miles out of a set - usually more like 6,000 if I'm having "fun") have amazing traction in dry or wet. I did 1,200 miles last week on the bike up through New England where 4 out of 5 days had rain. The tires and traction were never a worry. MUCH better than 10 years ago and unbelievably better than 30 years ago when I started riding... 30 years ago a high-humidity day was a butt-clencher. _______D_o_n__________S_p_r_i_n_g__L_a_k_e__H_t_s____________ Don Eilenberger, Spring Lk Hts, NJ NJ Shore BMW Riders - http://www.njsbmwr.org/ E39 Enthusiasts Group - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bmwe39/ '03 525iT, '98 M3C/5, '87 K75S

Having gone through two of the seals, you can probably supply the part and they will use it. It certainly isn't hard to install it to the new window prior to dropping it in to the opening. > Also, one may want to remove the wipers and the cover under the windshield > them. The cover you speak of gets cracked fairly easy, anyway; so replacing it is probably the best bet :) Chester ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

First you have to remove the wiper arms, which is not easy. There's a cap that you pry off them a 13mm nut and wave washer. After that, you have wiggle the living sh*t out of them or if you have a puller type device. I would highly the later approach :) Once the arms are off, you have to remove the little plastic screw caps that hold the cover in place. After that, you just have to remove the whole shroud. The only tricky area are the corners where there's a little tab that goes under the windshield to hold the shroud down. Hi, I watched the guy as he changed my windsheild. The hood might get in the way. You might have to take a screw out of the hinge mechanism that will allow the back edge of the hood to lift up. Mine is crappy so I'll probably change it out also. Yes, without the hood, it's definitely much easier, but it's still possible. If the hood is not in the fully opened position, the corner won't be in the crevice. Chester --- "Kent L.
